Overall, the New County Hotel offers value for money if you are looking for a reasonably priced hotel in the city center. Unfortunately there was an issue with our booking (no fault whatsoever of the hotel,) which may have left us stranded, but the staff on the check in desk were super helpful in finding us an available room. Check in was simple, a reception desk as you walk into the venue, or alternatively, instructions to check in at the bar. Unfortunately due to the booking error, we did end up on the 3rd floor which is incredibly hot (again, no fault of the hotel, and this unusual British weather....) and it is worth noting, there is no elevator access. If you are staying in the rooms that are street facing, there is some noise from local pubs. Cleanliness was great. The rooms are cleaned to a good standard, and we had fresh towels replenished as needed. We would absolutely stay here again.

Excellent location in the historic centre

This is a period hotel which has been completely refurbished, on the pedestrianised centre. There is a very peaceful courtyard at the rear, and rooms are better appointed than at Travelodge or Premier Inn. There is a council multi-storey car park at the rear, which charges £8 per day. My room had a proper fridge and a micro-wave. The courtyard could be much improved by having window boxes at ground floor windows, with geraniums. These cost little, are low maintenance, and would dramatically improve the appearance.

I was a bit apprehensive after reading some of the reviews but I’m glad I booked anyway. The service was tip top from everyone I met. The place smelled of fresh paint. My room was very clean and bathroom shower looked new. I was in Room 15 and it overlooked a courtyard, so was very quiet. The bed was comfortable. I would stay here again.

The reception was closed and no sign to say uou meed to check in at the bar but no issues after this point. Bar area is modern. Halls to bedrooms are outdated but bedroom very clean.

Lovely room in courtyard in a great location

Everything was great. I loved the room that was in the courtyard, although the mattress was lumpy and uncomfortable and the bedding didn't fit. The lad on the check in desk was great but was on his own and had to deal with two other people before me with other things besides check in. This made check in really slow, but I was in no rush

The property was initially reasonably easy to find. It was well sign posted and opposite a distinctive building which is easily recognisable from their ‘profile’ picture. Check in however is a little confusing. There is a ‘reception’ desk just beyond the foyer, however this is closed and shuttered off. I was able to gain a reasonable amount of access into the hotel as there is nothing stopping anyone from doing so before I returned to the foyer. There is a sign on the shutter advising guests to check in at the ‘bar’ however this would be more useful for people if this sign indicated that the bar is inside Harvey’s which is part of the hotel. If this had been more clear check in would have been a lot easier. On checking in it was easy to find my room which was in a courtyard and was a good size for just one person. The room was pretty clean and the fridge was useful for storing my own milk and bottled water, with ample space for more items if I’d wanted to add to it. The only issue with the room was the bed had an incorrect sized bottom sheet on, which would not stay fitted to the corners even when adjusted. Likely it was a single sized sheet on the double bed and didn’t fit correctly. Otherwise everything else was standard and fitted with the price offered for the accommodation

No shower & Hotel not interested in the issue

Stayed here for a night with some friends to attend a wedding. Stayed in room 2 and our shower did not work. Even after raising the issue with the hotel at check in nothing was done about this and no alternative rooms where offered, as a result of this we had to go to the wedding without showering and also same for the drive home the following day.

The hotel was good and it's location is excellent, however no lift and narrow winding corridors are not conducive to an elderly patron. The single bed mattress while adequate was lumpy in places and uncomfortable.
