I stayed at Casa do Figueirinha (Madeira) in October 2025 through Vrbo and was shocked by both the property’s condition and the lack of accountability from Vrbo/Expedia.
The property was nothing like advertised — the front garden resembled a building site, the apartment had a strong sewage smell, and there was a visible pipe under the bedroom. Most concerning, the second bedroom could only be accessed by leaving the main apartment, crossing an outdoor courtyard, and unlocking a separate exterior door. I was travelling alone with my son, and this setup was clearly unsafe and unsuitable for a child, yet nowhere mentioned in the listing. Within minutes of preparing food, ants appeared all over the kitchen surfaces.
The host never replied, and Vrbo and Expedia passed responsibility back and forth for days. After three of my scheduled ten nights, I had to move out and spend significant money on another place to stay. Vrbo’s desktop “Health and Safety” review dismissed the evidence, showing how disconnected their customer support has become from their stated values of trust and guest care. The owners ignored all of my correspondence and I still havent had a reply. Sadly, I didnt look at the reviews when i booked it as multiple others flagged the exact same issues.
I’m sharing this so others are aware of the true condition of this property and the limited support you can expect from Vrbo/Expedia when serious issues arise.
