The medieval rock hewn churches of Lalibela are a world wonder by any definition. Carved out of the surrounding bedrock in the 12th & 13th centuries, the churches were intended to be a "New Jerusalem", an African Jerusalem. The greatest of these churches is the iconic Bete Giyorgis. Today the 11 churches are part open air museum and part active pilgrimage destination for Ethiopians. With a stay at FikirandRay Lodge, you'll be centrally located in Lalibela, steps from Church of St. George and within a 10-minute walk of Bet Danaghel.
I could not enjoy the property as for the 10 days that I was there most the time I was ill. I think this may have to do with the lack of deep cleaning. Hot water was also an issue. It took several request for a heater. The Wi-Fi never worked.
