HistoryOriginally the home of indigenous Aboriginal people, Warrnambool is named after a close by volcanic cone. Local stories say that Europeans first visited the area in the 1600s, although there is no solid proof of this. Europeans were definitely in the area though from the early 1800s. Whaling was a popular activity in Warrnambool, and it saw great expansion and development during the Victorian Gold Rush.
Visit Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village and take a fascinating journey back in time to the days when many ships were lost in the unforgiving waters.
