Nothing else compares to enjoying coastal breezes at the seaside. At some stage during your trip, take the time to see Teluk Bahang Beach, 90 kilometres to the west.

You won't need to venture too far to uncover some nice natural sights. Grab your car keys and venture over to Ulu Legong Hot Springs, 15 kilometres away from Pengkalan Hulu, for a relaxed day. Or maybe Lata Bayu Waterfall is more to your taste? You'll find it 20 kilometres away.

Betong is 11 kilometres to the northeast and worth going to. Need some more ideas? Baling, 12 kilometres to the west of Pengkalan Hulu, ought to be on your itinerary.

Perak has an intriguing past. Spend a day exploring some of the surrounding traditional villages. Don't stress if there isn't much information online — the locals will surely have some stories to share!

If you're curious about the local set of beliefs, organise a visit to one or two temples. Even if you don't have a spiritual awakening, it's likely that you'll find a little inner calm.

Your eyes shouldn't have all the fun while you're in Perak. Give your taste buds a little TLC too by digging into the local food and beverage offerings. After all, you can't say you've really experienced a destination until you've tasted its flavours.

Put in the effort to bond with your hosts by learning a few expressions in Malaysian. Try to get your lips around 'Selamat tengah hari'. It translates as 'good afternoon'. Maybe you'll find 'Boleh cakap perlahan sedikit?' is a bit easier to roll off the tongue? It means 'please speak more slowly'.

What better way to immerse yourself in a place than by experiencing a day of national celebration? There'll be plenty of festivities arranged for Independence Day on the 31st of August.

Before you pack up and say "Sampai nanti", why not spend the remainder of your holiday allowance and treat yourself to some souvenirs of Pengkalan Hulu?
