Holidays in Mulu

Done with scrolling through other people's holiday pics while munching on your brekkie? Then book a getaway to Mulu and spend your days among the breathtaking forests, jungle, rainforest and rivers of Sarawak.

If you travel 95 kilometres of Mulu, you'll come across the important city of Bandar Seri Begawan.

You won't have to venture too far to uncover some splendid natural sights. Hop in the car and venture over to Gunung Buda National Park, 35 kilometres away from Mulu, for a relaxing day. Or maybe Gunung Mulu World Heritage Area is more your cup of tea? You'll find it 10 kilometres away.

If you've got enough time, why not check out some close-by places? Long Terawan and Long Seridan are 20 kilometres and 30 kilometres away, respectively.

It's hard to think of a better way to see the local landscapes than on an exciting adventure. Join in on a bit of rock climbing or mountain climbing and get your heart pumping!

If you're feeling a little frayed around the edges, take the opportunity to spend time out in the open and go bird watching. If that's not your style, wildlife watching might be more to your taste.

Are you a bit pressed for time? Signing up for some guided nature walks, wildlife spotting tours and city walking tours will ensure you get much more out of your adventure.

Want to have some fun off dry land? Sarawak is a wonderful area to dip your toes into some rafting and canoeing. They're must-do activities, even for the biggest landlubber!

You're bound to discover a range of treasures packed into the region's nature museums and craft workshops.

If it's not raining cats and dogs, why not take the opportunity to discover the surrounding area's open-air markets?

Learn about the region's lively past by exploring a few fortresses. If a tour guide isn't around, ensure you do some research of your own.

Whether or not you believe in a higher power, checking out one of the surrounding temples is a worthwhile opportunity to familiarise yourself with the area's spiritual leanings.

Your eyes shouldn't get to have all the fun while you're in Sarawak. Give your taste buds a little loving too by indulging in the local food and drink. After all, you haven't truly experienced a destination until you've tasted its flavours.

No self-respecting food fan would leave Mulu without sampling a handful of the signature meals, such as laksa (noodle soup) and ikan terubok masin (salted fish).

Your time in Mulu is certain to be more fun if you make the effort to master a couple of the local phrases. 'Terima kasih' means 'thank you'. One more common phrase is 'Nama saya ...' ('I am from..').

If you're considering heading to Mulu in August, you'll want to be here around the 31st for Independence Day. There's always plenty of excitement leading up to this national day of celebration.

"Sampai jumpa lagi" doesn't have to mean farewell forever. Why not hang onto a few Malaysian ringgits for your next holiday?

If you're flying home, it's a wise idea to plan your route to the terminal in advance. From the middle of Mulu, you'll need to journey approximately 100 kilometres north to Brunei International Airport (BWN), the nearest airport.
