How about a holiday in picture-perfect
Switzerland? Our Luzern hotels are the perfect place to relax – right on the shores of Lake Lucerne with beautiful mountains in the background. This destination really is fit for a queen – even Queen Victoria holidayed here!
History
Luzern (also known as Lucerne) is not only situated on the edge of Lake Lucerne but also on both banks of the Reuss River. To get from one side of town to the other, locals use Chapel Bridge, Switzerland's oldest wooden bridge, built in the 1300s. This footbridge is completely covered and the underside of its roof is covered in pretty paintings to admire while you walk across!
Another amazing building to visit is the Jesuit Church, which was built in 1666, making it the country's very first baroque building.
Things to do
Take a cable car – or hike if you're up for it –to the top of Mt. Pilatus and Mt. Rigi for a bird's eye view of beautiful Lake Lucerne. When you get back down, go for a swim (only in summer) or a boat cruise on the water and let your stress just melt away.
When it comes to museums, Luzern is well-endowed! The Swiss Museum of Transport is the most popular museum in the nation, and if you're an art buff, you won't want to miss the Sammlung Rosengart Museum, with work on display from Picasso, Monet, Matisse and Renoir – just to name a few.
Shopping and dining
The cobblestoned shopping district of Kappellgasse is the perfect place to browse boutique fashion stores and pick up a fancy Swiss watch. Or for some fresh local produce, head to the Farmers' Market held on Saturday and Tuesday mornings where you can also pick up some of the freshest hot chocolate you’ll ever taste – yum!
After a big day out, you can sit down to a delicious alpine meal. Classic meals in Lucerne usually involve pastry, veal, apples and cheese – sometimes all in one dish! You'll also be able to indulge in truckloads of Swiss chocolate, and there are plenty of places in town to drop in for a night cap before heading back to your hotel.
Annual events
Classical music lovers, make sure you grab tickets to the Lucerne Festival in August/September. This summer festival gathers the best of the best orchestras and conductors from around the world, so you won't want to miss out.
If street parades are more your thing, plan your trip around the Lucerne Carnival in February. You can expect to have lots of fun while watching marching bands go by in elaborate costumes and comical hand-carved masks.
Getting here and around
The simplest way to get here is to catch one of these
cheap flights to Zurich because the
Zurich Airport is only 40 minutes away, or about an hour if you take the train. Once you've arrived, you'll be able to get around the city centre on foot, and the outskirts of the town are regularly serviced by public buses.
