Holidays in Kathmandu

Some folks say you can’t buy happiness. But you can buy a ticket to Kathmandu, and that's pretty damn close!

As you stroll through the city streets, you'll be rubbing shoulders with roughly 1,400,000 residents.

Boudhanath and the Pashupatinath Temple are marvellous sights that are known throughout the world.

Whether you’re after the perfect picnic spot or just a grassy mound to sit back on, the Garden of Dreams is the place to circle on your map.

Slip on your comfiest walking shoes and get ready to go adventuring. There are numerous nature reserves in the surrounding area that are just waiting to be enjoyed. The fresh, crisp air and natural surroundings at Langtang National Park and Shivapuri National Park are as energising as they come. Guru Rinpoche Cave and Manjushree Park & Cave are two more that are worth visiting.

An hour or two spent contemplating the exhibits at the National Museum is sure to satisfy a curious soul. The Military Museum is also highly recommended.

You don't have to be an explorer to see all of the astonishing wonders of the world, particularly when you've got the Natural History Museum. This place is brimming with unusual specimens and captivating artefacts.

When it comes to gallery going, art connoisseurs are in luck. The Siddhartha Art Gallery is just the beginning. When you're done, appreciate the captivating paintings and other striking works at the National Birendra Art Gallery and the Bodhnath Stupa.

The Gaddhi Baithak and Bhimsen Tower should be at the top of your list if you want to immerse yourself in Kathmandu's past. If you're a bona-fide history nut, The Crematoria is also worth an hour or two of your time.

Gorgeous structures that have played host to many of Kathmandu's most important people throughout the ages, King's Palace and Hanuman Dhoka show off some unique architectural elements. Nuwakot Durbar should also be on your list.

No matter your beliefs, Kopan Monastery and the Swayambhunath can help you reconnect with your spiritual side. The Dakshinkali Temple and the Adinath Temple also attract many spiritual travellers.

One of the best ways to get to know Kathmandu is to mill around in its public spaces. Kathmandu Durbar Square and Indra Chowk are two places to pull up a bench and immerse yourself in local life. Also stop by Kumari Chowk and Basantapur, particularly if they're hosting any entertaining social or cultural events.

Built as testaments to Kathmandu's important past, Chabahil and the Great Thunderbolt have many tales to tell. You may also want to pay your respects at the Stupa Platform and the Great Drums & Kot Square, two more historic sites worth stopping by.

The Kathmandu University is a vibrant higher educational establishment. Converse with the students and steep yourself in a stimulating environment. If you've got some spare time, why not take a look around the Tribhuwan University as well?

Get a tasty snack and check out the discounted stock at Kathmandu Civil Mall. If you're not able to find anything of interest there, chuck your bags into the boot and continue on to Asan Tole.

Release stress, keep fit and enjoy yourself at the same time by spending an afternoon on the fairways at the Royal Nepal Golf Course.

It's much better to look back on life and say, 'Can you believe I did that?' instead of, 'I really wish I had done that.' So, while you're here you shouldn't miss the chance to see some of the less famous sights, such as the TU Central Library and Maru Tole. The Chandragiri Cable Car Bottom Station and the Chandragiri Cable Car Top Station are two more places you should consider.

Hotels in Kathmandu

Keen to lock in your Kathmandu hotel? There's more than 224 accommodations available on lastminute.com.au. The national capital is your oyster!

If you'd rather spend cash on adventures than on a hotel, the Pariwar B&B and the Kathmandu Madhuban Guest House are two places you should take a look at. But then again — you are on holiday. If you'd rather live it up while you're here, we don't blame you! The experienced staff at The Dwarika's Hotel and the Hyatt Regency Kathmandu are masters of luxury.

Whatever else you plan to do, you can't miss Boudhanath. To make sure that you get the full experience with this world-famous attraction, why not stay close by? The Hotel Tibet International is around 0.06 kilometres away, while the Shambaling Boutique Hotel is 0.8 kilometres away.
