Holidays in Kamunting

Hey, we get it! You're sick of your boss and you need a holiday, right? So why not use some annual leave and drive around the gorgeous rural landscapes and beaches of Perak. Just base yourself in Kamunting and take it from there.

It lies 220 kilometres northwest of Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia.

Sitting 80 kilometres to the south, Teluk Batik Beach is a wonderful place to spend an afternoon enjoying the sound of the waves. Teluk Nipah Beach also boasts some picturesque views. You'll find this piece of coastline 75 kilometres to the south.

Could you do with a day out in nature? Hop in the car and visit Burmese Pool, 7 kilometres from Kamunting. Alternatively, soak up some sunshine at Bukit Larut, 7 kilometres away.

Do you like the sound of the Zoo Taiping & Night Safari and All Saints’ Church? These sights are in Taiping, just 2 kilometres northeast of Kamunting. Or maybe the Perak Museum and Matang Mangrove Forest Reserve appeal more to you? To visit them, travel to Matang, 8 kilometres to the southwest.

Kuala Kangsar is located 30 kilometres away from Kamunting and is an essential part of the local region. Close by attractions include the Masjid Ubudiah, the Istana Kota and the Istana Iskandariah. Got some time to kill? The Istana Kenangan and the Ubudiah Mosque are also within easy reach.

Step off solid ground and take in Perak from a different angle. With a range of invigorating activities like swimming and snorkeling on offer, it's a great playground for water enthusiasts.

We're not quite sure how they managed to squeeze so much into the region's craft workshops. Step through the doors and experience what they've got on offer.

Pull on your comfiest walking shoes and head to one of the surrounding area's pleasant outdoor attractions. Its open-air markets are ready and waiting to be explored.

Get a better sense of the area's past by making your way to some of the close-by traditional villages. Do your own research into their historical importance or get some information from the most knowledgeable tour guide in town.

Learn about the local religion and maybe get in touch with your spiritual side by calling in at one or two of Kamunting's temples.

Your eyes shouldn't get to have all the fun while you're in Perak. Give your taste buds a little attention as well by trying out the local food and beverage offerings. After all, you can't say you've truly experienced a destination until you've tasted its flavours.

Searching for a traditional Kamunting eating experience? There are some specialty dishes to watch out for, such as ikan bakar (grilled seafood) and heong peng (shallot filled pastry).

Ask any seasoned traveller and they'll tell you that the easiest way to enrich your getaway is to learn how to say a handful of the local expressions and phrases. Try to get your mouth around 'Nama saya ...'. It translates as 'I am from..'. Maybe you'll find 'Saya tidak faham' easier to get your head around? It means 'I don't understand'.

What better way to learn about the culture of a place than by joining in on a day of national celebration? There'll be lots of festivities arranged for Independence Day on the 31st of August.

Before you pack up your belongings and say "Sampai nanti", why not spend the last of your holiday allowance and treat yourself to some lasting reminders of Kamunting?

From the middle of Kamunting, it's about 250 kilometres to the southwest to Kuala Namu International Airport (KNO). This is the closest airport. Remember to allow yourself a bit of extra time to get there so you don't miss your plane!
