Holidays in Highworth

Highworth is a destination that has stacks of cool stories to tell. If you think your life's been a bit humdrum lately, a trip here is the perfect answer!

It's situated 65 kilometres from Bristol and its energetic streets.

You won't have to venture too far afield to see some splendid natural sights. Warm up the car and make your way over to Uffington White Horse, 12 kilometres away from Highworth, for a relaxing day. Or perhaps Silbury Hill tickles your fancy? You'll find it 25 kilometres away.

Even on holiday, it can be hard to shake off the pressures of modern life. If you're looking to calm your mind, leave your phone behind and go for a walk at Stanton Country Park.

Be sure to pack some red and white clothes so you can encourage the rugby union team, the London Welsh, at Kassam Stadium. Located 35 kilometres away in United Kingdom, the stadium is also the home ground of the Oxford United FC.

Ride the chairlift at Gloucester Ski and Snowboard Centre, relish the dazzling white views and then shred your way back to base. For even more chilled thrills, check out the runs at Alpine Snowsports Southampton.

Are you interested in stopping by the Cotswold Wildlife Park and Cotswolds Woollen Weavers? They're right near the middle of Kelmscott, 8 kilometres to the northeast. Alternatively, you could go to Fairford. It's 9 kilometres to the northwest of Highworth and regarded for Combat Splat and Lakeside Ski & Wake.

The Lydiard Park, Swindon Designer Outlet and the Museum of the Great Western Railway are all very close to Swindon, 9 kilometres to the southwest. Want a few more excuses to swing by? Coate Water Country Park and Laserquest Swindon are not far away either.

Eating is one of life's biggest pleasures, and since you're here, we guess you think travel is too. Combine your affection for both by getting out and sampling the local food and drink at some of the restaurants, cafés and bars across town.

A traditional ingredient in the cuisine here is fish. One more is lamb. They're worth getting a taste for if they're not already a part of your food repertoire.

While Highworth offers no shortage of culinary delights, you shouldn't leave without tasting bangers and mash (sausages with mashed potatoes) and ploughman’s lunch (cheese, bread, pickles and cold cuts). Considered classic local dishes, you'll need to stick them on your must-try list if you really want to get a taste of this destination.

'Stressed' spelled backwards is 'desserts', and we don't think that's a coincidence. There's no more delightful way to let your troubles melt away than with spotted dick (sponge pudding of dried fruits with custard), a treat that's often found on dinner tables here.

It's impossible to get the full travelling experience until you've tasted the local beer. Whether you're looking to relax in a quiet corner or get a bit of liquid courage to mingle with new friends, order Yorkshire Bitter.

When the night begs for something stronger, ask for some Bombay Saphire Gin. On the rocks or in a cocktail — the bartender should know the tastiest way to have it.

Not much is nicer than a drop of vino with a meal. Here, Denbies Pinot Gris and Chapel Down Chardonnay are what the wine authorities usually order.

Time to pack up and go home? Catch a final sunset in the gorgeous Wiltshire region before you have to say goodbye.

Flying home? Choose a route, pack up your bags and double check your alarm. The closest airport, RAF Brize Norton Airport (BZZ), is about 17 kilometres to the northeast.

"Lovely hotel with beautiful views over the lake. Some elements of the hotel let it down, the ensuite was tired looking with significant orange staining to the bath taps. Pillows were uncomfortable and would have been nice to have some bottles of water in the room. However, overall I would recommend ..."

Old but good.
"The Saracens is old but has character, the staff were very good and the food was brilliant (Chardonnay very nice too!) The stairs were a bit steep and beds a bit narrow. Not expensive, don't do breakfast but a few doors away lovely café did! A pleasant stay."
