Life in the big smoke driving you nuts? Reckon a change of scenery and a bit of greenery would get you sorted? Then whisk yourself away to Guzelyurt and chillax among the beautiful beaches and mountains of Cyprus.

Make your way around 35 kilometres west of Guzelyurt and you'll arrive at the lively streets of Nicosia.

Interested in spending some time kicking back on the coastline? Finikoudes Beach is situated 65 kilometres from Guzelyurt. Sitting 90 kilometres away, Nissi Beach is a wonderful alternative.

Take a long, deep breath and immerse yourself in the natural surroundings of Mount Olympus. It lies 30 kilometres away from Guzelyurt. You can also find more peace and quiet at Millomeris Waterfalls, 35 kilometres away.

Sports fanatics won't be left out in the cold during their visit. Makario Stadium is 30 kilometres away in Egkomi and a fabulous place to get your sporting fix. Make sure you check the event schedule to see what's on.

Like the sound of Kykkos Monastery and Soli Ruinen? These awesome attractions are in Lefke, just 16 kilometres southwest of Guzelyurt. Or maybe Church of Agios Nikolaos tis Stegis and Panagia Podithou Church are more your thing? To see them, go to Galata, 25 kilometres south.

Spend a morning or afternoon exploring Eleftheria Square, the Famagusta Gate and the Cyprus Library. All of these attractions are near the middle of Yenişehir, 35 kilometres to the east. Got some more time to kill? The Cyprus Folk Art Museum and Archbishop's Palace should also be on your travel plan.

From scuba diving to swimming, there's no shortage of ways to get your hair wet in Cyprus. Just don't forget to bring your sun cream!

Dinner isn't dinner without dessert, so don't worry about counting calories for a while and savour one of the most well-known after-dinner treats, pastish (cookie).

Your visit to Guzelyurt is bound to be more fun if you learn a couple of the local phrases. You'll be glad you learnt 'Kaliméra su', which is how they say 'good morning'. Another often used phrase is 'Pos íse' ('how are you?').

If you have the good luck to be in Guzelyurt on the 1st of October, get ready to party! Independence Day sees crowds of people heading out and celebrating.

It's always a pity to say "Yiá sou" to Guzelyurt, but don't worry, it's not going anywhere!
