Located on the border between France and Germany, you'll find the Alsace region and at the heart of the area is the shining city of Strasbourg. When you stay in one of our Strasbourg hotels, you'll experience the best of both worlds with architecture, cuisine and cultural sites that meld the German-style with French.
HistoryStrasbourg was originally part of the Roman Empire, about 2,000 years ago. But since the Middle Ages, it has been tossed between German and French rule, thus accounting for its German-meets-French style. Around the city, you'll find heaps of historically significant attractions, plus the little island of Grande Île is World Heritage listed, so it's definitely worth wandering around. And here's a fun historic fact for you: the printing press was invented in Strasbourg!
Things to doThe jewel in Strasbourg's crown is without a doubt the Gothic Cathedral and you will be absolutely astonished at its exquisite design. Since it was built between the 1100s and 1439, you'll see plenty of examples of Gothic and Renaissance design here but the icing on the cake is its astronomical clock. Try to get here around noon, so you can watch all the cute little characters pop out of the clock and parade around.
The Rohan Palace is another architectural wonder, as is the Maison Kammerzell, and Petite France is a beautifully historic neighbourhood on the banks of pretty canals.
If you follow politics, you might be interested in a tour of the European Parliament, as well as the Council of Europe and the European Court of Human Rights, which all call Strasbourg home.
Shopping and diningReady for an upmarket shopping experience? Whip out your credit cards and hit the elegant boutique stores along Rue des Hallebards or opt for a casual stroll around the Farmers' Market on a Saturday morning.
After all that shopping, you can fill up on a tasty pub meal in one of the local taverns. But Strasbourg is best known for its delicious gingerbread, so don't forget to purchase plenty to take home. Getting here and aroundTo get here, book one of these cheap flights to Strasbourg and then make the most of your trip by walking or cycling around the city. You can also cruise around by bus if your legs get weary and if you're planning on exploring other parts of the country, all you have to do is jump aboard a train.
So what are you waiting for? Book your Strasbourg accommodation with us now and live up every lastminute on the French-German border!
