Holidays in Samut Sakhon

It's simple — a life full of adventure is a life well-lived. So grab your passport, pack your gear and say hello to Samut Sakhon!

It's situated 40 kilometres southwest of Thailand's capital, Bangkok.

Take a short trip to Krathum Baen, 14 kilometres away. Once you arrive, head straight to the Samphran Elephant Ground and Zoo.

Pattaya Beach and Cha-am Beach are perfect to visit if you're after somewhere to unwind by the ocean.

You won't need to be stuck on the highway all day to see some nature around these parts. Just 50 kilometres out of Samut Sakhon, Chompol Cave is a popular place to enjoy some fresh air. More tranquil surrounds are waiting for you at Khlong Saen Saep, 45 kilometres away.

Join passionate fans rooting for the Thailand National Team at their home turf of Rajamangala Stadium, 45 kilometres away in Bangkok. Blend in with the locals by wearing the team's colours, red and yellow.

If you travel 20 kilometres to the north from Samut Sakhon, you'll come across Sam Phran. Some travellers like to use this destination as a base when checking out the Wat Samphran and the Thai Human Imagery Museum.

Roughly 60 kilometres to the southwest, Phetchaburi is a place that has something for everyone. Big C Superstore, the Wat Mahathat Worawihan and the Wat Kamphaeng Laeng are all pretty close. Keep in mind, Baan Peun Palace and the Wat Yai Suwannaram are also worthwhile.

Eating is one of life's greatest pleasures, and since you're here, we guess you think travel is too. Combine your fondness for both by going out and sampling the food and drink offerings at a handful of the restaurants, cafés and bars in town.

Ask one of the locals what they recommend eating and khao phat nam phrik long ruea (rice, chili and duck’s eggs) will likely be the first thing that rolls off their tongue. Khao phat nam phrik long ruea (rice, chili and duck’s eggs) is another of the region's signature foods you should try.

Put in the effort to bond with your hosts by learning a handful of expressions in the local language. Try to pronounce 'Sà-wàt-dee kráp/kâ'. It means 'good morning'. One more to commit to memory is 'Kòp kun man', meaning 'thank you'.

There's bound to be excitement in the air around the 5th of December. The locals will be making preparations for Birthday of King Phumiphon, a day of national celebrations.

It's always a pity to say "Læ̂w phb kạn h̄ım̀" to Samut Sakhon, but don't worry, it's not going anywhere!

Ready to fly out? Map a route, pack up your suitcase and double check your alarm. The nearest airport, Suvarnabhumi International Airport (BKK), is about 55 kilometres to the east.

Nice hotel with great staff
"Staff were excellent all around. Service in the room can be improved with slight changes. Toiletries were for a 1 person whereas we were a couple. Small thing but it can be avoided to get the 5 stars. Room was very nice but slight smell of mould."
