The Vibes of Darwin
NT local Jennifer takes us on a journey through Darwin and gives you the lowdown on soaking up the best this northern capital has to offer in all its foodie glory.
With the third Season of MasterChef in full swing, we won’t blame you for drooling over the amazing food the contestants have been dishing up because, well, we have too! And there’s no better way to overcome those cravings than a trip to one of Darwin’s top dry season attractions – the Mindil Beach Markets.
Every Thursday and Sunday evening, Mindil Beach transforms into a vibrant market place boasting 60 food stalls and 200 arts and crafts stalls, not to mention great entertainment. Darwin prides itself on being a multi-cultural city and it’s definitely shown through the huge range of food on offer – Thai, Mexican, Vietnamese and Sri Lankan just to name a few.
For those who would rather try a more Aussie dish, Roadkill Cafe has kangaroo, crocodile, buffalo and emu on the menu and if you love the name, you’ll love the logo even more: ‘You kill it, we grill it!’ So why not grab a plate of multi-cultural goodness and sit on the beach to watch the sunset, check out the musical talent or watch the carnival style antics of the amazing performers for a vibe unlike any other.
Speaking of vibes, whether you’re a tourist or a local looking for a good place to stay, be sure to check in at the Vibe Hotel. Located on the waterfront precinct and only a 10 minute walk from the city, it’s just far enough to feel like you’re on an island resort. The deluxe view room has an exceptional outlook over the harbour as well as the recreational beach and wave pool lagoon which are right on your doorstep.
The Vibe offers a real tropical and modern style of accommodation with friendly staff and a delicious menu at their Curve Cafe & Bar. A short walk from the hotel and you’ll find Trampoline Gelato, a great place to treat the kids (and yourself!). For the adults, Fiddler’s Green is (as you guessed it) an Irish pub and restaurant dishing up great Irish and Aussie style pub grub guaranteed to make your mouth water.
While you are in Darwin exploring what’s on offer, be sure to check out my top 5 foodie favourites:
1. For fresh produce, Greenies Real Food in Rapid Creek Shopping Village is well known for their locally grown organic produce.
2.Salvatores Cafe is the best place for an incredibly good breakfast and fruit smoothie to match.
3. Crocodylus Park is a great way to see crocs up close and personal when they’re alive but they also sell delicious BBQ Croc Packs so you can feast on the popular attraction!
4. Tim’s Surf and Turf Restaurantis tucked away in a little laneway in the city, where you can enjoy the laid back atmosphere of the restaurant and the delicious menu.
5. Don’t forget to indulge in a range of cuisine in style at one of the lovely restaurants at SkyCity.
Well that’s it from me this month! Until next time, happy travels!
