Sydney Small Bar Walking Tour – Two Feet and a Heartbeat
When most people think of small, boutique bars, Melbourne usually comes to mind. Well, not for much longer! Following the introduction of a small-bar liquor licence in Sydney, this is set to change. Small bars are rapidly popping up over the city – a colossal win for those Sydneysiders who appreciate a good cocktail, boutique beer and fine wine. Yay!
To get the goss on this emerging scene, fellow lastminute lovely Leah and I decide to take a small bar walking tour with our friends from Two Feet and a Heartbeat – a tough gig, but someone has to do it!
Now, I’m sure you’re thinking “I don’t need to take a Sydney bar tour.” Well trust me, you do! I’ve lived in Sydney for a while and this tour even surprises me, especially as it focuses on the CBD area and not my usual watering holes of Darlinghurst and Surry Hills. Our guide for the night, Michelle, takes us to three small bars within walking distance of each other. But don’t worry, each tour is different; with a number of bars on board, the tour mixes it up from night to night keeping things exciting and fresh. As we walk through the city, Michelle points out other small bars for us to try out and even suggests what drinks to order. These expert tips make this tour a great option for tourists, expats, or those looking for a new local near the office (really any excuse will do!)
At each bar, we enjoy a complimentary drink or bar snack. My favourite is made of Nutri-Grain from The SG Bar – delish. As we sample the goods, Michelle talks about the bar’s history and we even meet the owners.
It’s awesome hearing how these small bars have come to life. The passion that goes into creating them is so cool. We hear how Elvis from ‘Since I Left You‘ and his business partner painstakingly nailed each and every tile individually onto the bar’s ceiling. While Jason from ‘The SG’ tells how the bar’s name came from his Grandmother’s beloved collection of spoons.
Without a doubt this was the most fun I’ve had on a Tuesday night. And even if you think you know all the cool places to visit in town, this tour will give you a glimpse into the passion that goes into building the perfect boutique bar. It’s also a great way to meet new people, taste some of Sydney’s best beverages and discover this growing scene – cheers!
So tell us: where is your favourite small bar?
