Sydney from the sky; flying with Sydney Heli Tours
You know it’s going to be a good day when your boss tells you to take a helicopter ride over Sydney before you start work.
Yes boss, whatever you say. 😉
And luckily for me, Sydney has really turned on the sunshine this morning.
I meet Lincoln (our charismatic chauffeur) at Sydney airport. I know it’s him cos he’s holding a sign with my name on it- nothing like feeling like a bit of a celeb on a Wednesday morning. After our quick walk/chat to the van, he drives us to Sydney Heli Tours HQ, just ten minutes from the terminals.
Sydney Heli Tours are the state’s largest scenic heli-flights service. And they have a garage full of helicopters- guys take note. After a quick coffee and a safety demo, we meet Forrest, our pilot for the day, and our helicopter, the Robinson R44. Today we see Sydney from the sky, in this bad-boy here.
Sydney Heli Tours operate most days. Their busiest times are on the weekends and during summer when everyone wants to see ‘that view’ from the sky.
Climbing into the contraption they call Robinson, we put our seatbelts and headsets on. And take a selfie (as you do).
The propellers spin, the cage rattles and then, lift off. It’s a weird sensation, but totally awesome.
We get high, fast. Over the airport, up into the sky. Our pilot, Forrest is charming and soothes any acrophobia away. He explains the tapestry of buildings from 1000 feet. I’m pretty sure he has the coolest job in the world.
We fly over Maroubra and Bondi Beach, float past Watsons Bay…
We approach the Harbour; the view I’ve been waiting for- hang a left and tilt over the Opera House. Craziest feeling ever!
And just like that- our 20 minute flight is over. Forrest requests permission to land, our feet touch the ground.
Lincoln unlocks the door, grabs my hand and just like you see on the movies, I walk away ducking my head so it doesn’t get chopped off by the spinning propeller. Pretty sure that can’t happen anyway 😉
This is my fifth (!) time in a helicopter, and I can tell you that it NEVER gets old. Thanks for the ride Sydney Heli Tours, I’ll take a helicopter adventure over morning meetings any day 😉
Sorry coffee, but a helicopter ride is the ONLY way to start the day. #ilovesydney #liveeverylastminute pic.twitter.com/h6dLst1qF4
