SolAria, Jupiters’ latest stage show

There is nothing more enticing than stepping into someone else’s fantasy. Let me explain…

From the producers who brought you Zircus comes a new adventure about love, longing and a place to call home. SolAria is Angelis Productions’ latest stage show held at Jupiters Casino on the GC. Thern Reynolds and Brisbane-born Nicole Sokolovic lead a cast of 30 performers who have been sourced both locally and internationally to keep you on the edge of your seat.

Smile!

It’s time for a break, so I grab my bestie and leave the big city lights of Brisbane. Broadbeach is our destination.

It’s opening night, and it’s clear this show is long awaited. Champagne is flowing, cameras are flashing- Jupiters has gone all out. Grabbing our wine, we hurry to our seats.

The show, around two hours long, is a mass of vibrant colour and takes us on a journey through SolAria, a fantasy world. Performances range from dance, aerial acts, singing and contortionists, but among them all, two really stand out.

Duo Rose, a trapeze act perform an passionate aerial spectacle combining aerial arts, gymnastics, and contortion. Their chemistry onstage is intense! Originally from the USA, they’ve spent time in Germany creating this incredible act.

Just looking at this makes me nervous

The other major highlight for me is Joel Salom, a well known Australian comedian. His performance combines comedy, mild nudity (PG) and speed juggling. I’m not sure whether he’s juggling or using a lightsaber. Using popular music, dad jokes, juggling and slap-stick comedy, Salom leaves us in stitches.

After the show we catch up with world renowned choreographer Anthony Iken and ask him a bit about his work.

How does this show compare with Zircus and LumiAir?

This one has more dance numbers, which I love. It meant more of a workload choreographically but I love that!

How long does it take to get a show like this together?

It’s around a three week rehearsal period with the cast; however it’s a few months in the creation process of putting it all together and working out all the logistics.

How long does it take to choreograph each dance?

I spend a week in lockdown with my choreography partner-in-crime Daniella Winter. We spend the whole week creating and tweaking routines. We don’t do any other work that week so our whole focus is just on that one task at hand.

The impressive skills in SolAria

How long do the dancers have to learn each piece?

The dancers learn the whole show in about a week, then it’s a couple of weeks of cleaning the numbers and staging them.

What’s your inspiration?

I get my inspiration from really random things. From all the amazingness out there on YouTube, seeing amazing movies that inspire me or reading great books that give me ideas. Also once I had a dream about a piece and then went in the next day and started working on it.

What was your interpretation of the story line? And how did that influence you?

The story line for SolAria is just a light one. It’s all things latin, cuban and it’s the place the lead dancer, Nicole Sokolovics grew up. SolAria is her home and she remembers it. The show is all about great acts with fantastic music and of course some high energy filled dance routines.
