Review: Indulge

Our SA blogger Q road tests gluten-free cook book Indulge and discovers that gluten-free doesn’t equal taste-free.

Indulge by Rowie Dillon

I know you have heard that gluttony is one of the seven deadly sins, but have you heard of a lesser known sin called gluten? Most of us have by now; with those that are intolerant of it much better diagnosed than they used to be and others voluntarily choosing to delete gluten from their lives.

If you have friends or family that are intolerant to gluten or intolerant to your use of it, Rowie Dillon provides a wonderful array of recipes for all occasions in her book Indulge that you can use to feed those you love without this naughty ingredient.

Date and Mixed Berry Muffins

My favourite recipe of those I tried was the toffeed mixed nuts, which was so yummy it was gobbled without a thought of photographing the evidence. It’s quick to make has very few ingredients; I handed some around at work for a treat and passed hunks of it to friends.

Gluten mostly prevents you from using flour made from wheat, so I chose to make muffins, both a savoury and sweet version (Rowie refers to them as Miniettes); and dates stuffed with goats cheese, just because it looked amazing. The sweet muffins have apple, mixed berries and dates in them, so lots of fruit for the sweet tooth and berries to add a bit of zing. The savoury muffins have cheese, sour cream and chutney a great combination of tastes.

A few reasons for you to get the book:
