Review: Dirty Rotten Scoundrels

For film buffs at heart, you may have already guessed this colourful performance finds its roots in the 1988 film, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. Set on the French Riviera, the musical centres around two con men who, in their own unique style, play the rich and famous to fund their desired lifestyle.
Tony Sheldon leads the cast as the confident, charming con artist, Lawrence Jameson. His co-lead, Matt Hetherington plays the hilarious, rough and ready, American crook, Freddy Benson who convinces Jameson to take him on as a project and teach him the secrets of the trade.

As the pair twist and turn out of sticky situations, you can’t help but laugh. Not only does the audience have a ball watching the story unfold, the pair get a kick out of the cracking script. There’s nothing better than watching performers love lighting up a stage.

Speaking of cracking, the women who capture the con artists’ attention are a force to be reckoned with. Katrina Retallick’s performance in the first half as Jolene Oaks, a larger than life character hailing from Oklahoma, almost steals the show. You’ll find yourself wanting her to return, but the story must continue and with that, enters the beautiful, multi layered Christine Colgate played by Amy Lehpamer.

The vocal performances from these women, and the entire cast are both fantastic. The entire show is polished and captivating from start to finish. An absolute must see.
