Hotel review | Ovolo Woolloomooloo
There’s a new kid on the Sydney hotel scene.
If you like your accommodation with quirky design, a great location, lots of value-adds and genuinely friendly staff, then look no further than the Ovolo Woolloomooloo.
Formerly the Taj Blue hotel, the new owners have injected their signature energy and wow factor into the 100 year-old space while retaining the charm and character of the historic building. It’s the perfect blend of the old and the new.
Situated on the swanky Woolloomooloo wharf, well known as much for its celebrity and paparazzi regulars as its restaurants, the location screams Sydney glamour. And that’s exactly what you get as you walk through the expansive hotel entry.
The design touches are seriously on point.
From the mesmerising feature clock that inevitably catches your eye above reception to the high ceilings and unique architecture, this ain’t like any other Sydney – or dare I say it, Australian – hotel.
My inner child kind of loves the way it’s lit up like a Christmas tree.
If streams of fairy lights don’t do it for your inner interior designer, the quirky signage located throughout might. Bonus points for Tay Tay puns up in lights.
And that’s all before we’ve even got to our suite! Located on the fifth floor with city skyline and water views, it’s hard not to imagine what it would be like to live here. With a spacious loft design, all of the mod-con touches (two TV areas, Apple TV, iPad guest guide, electric blinds) and a ridiculously comfy bed, I officially never want to go home.
If I haven’t convinced you yet, this will seal the deal: Ovolo Hotels are seriously generous in the freebies department. So you’ll totally feel like you’ve paid next to nothing once you mentally deduct the value of all of these goodies off the cost of your accommodation. Just some of the bonuses we enjoyed:
- A FREE mini-bar. And yep that includes alcohol (beer, sparkling wine and cider)
- Continental breakfast is included for all guests and it’s a seriously decent spread with the likes of Sonoma breads, cheeses (it’s never too early for brie), cured meats, smoked salmon, yoghurts, bircher muesli, pastries, fruit and juices.
- Unlimited multi-device Wi-Fi.
- Happy Hour is happy indeed with free drinks and snacks for guests between 5pm and 7pm. And a damn good soundtrack and vibe for good measure. Play pool or go old school with the arcade games while you’re there.
While you could easily make a meal out of the happy hour snacks, it would be a shame to miss a visit to the buzzing food and wine scene of Potts Point, an easy 10 minute stroll away. Monopole, The Apollo, Yellow, Cho Cho San and Good Times Artisan Ice-Cream are all top picks! And when you wake from a heavenly sleep, it would be rude not to go for a run or a stroll around the Royal Botanic Gardens to burn it all off. And then do it all again 😉
