Heaven at Hidden Valley

The bountiful Margaret River region is no secret to holidaymakers. Boasting beautiful beaches, world-class wineries and a host of activities for young and old, more than 250 000 visitors seek out its offerings each year.
But tucked away from the main highway, down a red gravel road, behind lush pastures filled with plump, happy sheep, there is a place so special, the region’s draw cards are soon forgotten. It offers something much more desirable: the opportunity to forget your worries and enter your own private paradise.

The aptly named Hidden Valley Forest Retreat provides us with the perfect environment to escape the rat race. Surrounded by nothing but forest and wildlife, we drive through the property to our lodge, led by our welcoming host — the first and last person we come into contact with during our stay.

The eco lodge is a uniquely Australian style cottage of timber, glass and corrugated iron that has forged a harmonious relationship with the natural environment. Inside, a king-sized bed and spa overlook window-framed forest, original artwork hangs on rammed earth walls, and relaxation onset is immediate.

Hidden Valley Forest Retreat offers enticing services such as a personal chef to cook for you, but we revel in the opportunity to cook together, the way any good meal should be made: with dancing, laughing and a glass of wine always within arms’ reach.

Dinners, like spas taken at night, are enjoyed by candlelight with a symphony of wildlife providing the background music.

Playful kookaburras and the gentle morning sun ease us into our mornings – a welcome change from the usual sneer of the weekday alarm. Even a trip to the bathroom is a pleasant experience, with heated tiles warming our cold tootsies along the way.

Perfect winter days are spent relaxing with books and enjoying the sun and wildlife. While we don’t spot the resident possum, we do get to meet a curious kangaroo cavorting in the bushes beside our entertaining deck.

The cool, wintery nights are made special with Lucy, a smooth cab sav made from handpicked grapes grown on the premises. It works its magic, enjoyed with creamy local cheeses and good conversation (sans children and work) by the warm crackle of the fireplace. Our only regret is that we didn’t take advantage of the in-house massage service.

For those who think they may get bored, there is plenty to do nearby, but don’t be surprised if your plans fade away with the days – there really is something magical about this place. Hidden Valley Forest Retreat is the perfect place to disconnect from the wired world and reconnect with someone special.
