Fashion, darling!

Ever wondered what it’s really like to experience a week of pure fashion? Well, wonder no more. International fashion and beauty expert RESCU.com.au guest contributor, Tali Shine, gives us the insider goss on her week at Australian Fashion Week and the trends to watch out for.

With the beautiful backdrop of Sydney Harbour and the sun (mostly) shining, international and local celebrities, buyers, journalists, bloggers and fashionistas ran around as fast as they could in sky-high platforms for Mercedes Benz Australian Fashion Week 2012.

The five days were a whirlwind of prints, colours and patterns. I jetted in from London as Guest Editor of RESCU.com.au and here’s the edit of what I loved the most, and what I predict you will be shopping for this summer…
Trend: Princess dressing
Mixed in amongst the interesting (not necessarily wearable) and futuristic garments were easy to wear, feminine dresses. The type of dresses that make you feel like putting on your dancing shoes and pulling out your best jewels.
Rebecca Vallance has the party season covered with pretty, printed silk dresses and delicately sequined minis.
Johanna Johnson gave us so many red carpet and wedding dress offerings, that many front row fashionistas were dreaming of their own wedding day- purely so they could wear one of her gowns.

Bec and Bridge have matured from denim to princess worthy wisps of holiday perfection in the form of white and aqua dresses, skirts and shorts, all inspired by the glamorous Island of Capri. Jackie Kennedy would be proud!

Even Oroton switched from leather bags to give us glamorous shirt-dress, skirts and cropped jackets we could wear on holiday or on a mega yacht.
Trend: Bold and beautiful
Colour was big on the catwalk, in particular bright yellow. Lisa Ho’s show was filled with wearable, brightly coloured art, staged in the appropriate backdrop of the Art Gallery of NSW. Her palm print blazer and full length lemon dress is sure to be a hit this summer.

Everywhere else from Zimmerman to Manning Cartel we saw clashing floral prints and stripes worn together. This look seemed fresh and can be taken from the catwalk to the sidewalk.

Trend: Peplums
One trend we saw all over the catwalks was the peplum, attached to tops and dresses. We particularly love the white leather Toni Maticevski peplum top worn by Jodi Gordon and paired with black leather trousers, and Tuula Vintage founder Jessica Stein’s short-sleeved version which she teamed with red and white tie-dyed Isabel Marant jeans.

Trend: Beauty
With the odd artistic exception, hair and makeup was beautiful, glowing and exactly how we want to look in the real world. Hair was long, straight and lustrous with ‘wet hair’ also big on the catwalk and easy to achieve at home.

Blame it on the Duchess of Cambridge or our very own Miranda Kerr, statement brows were all over the catwalks. Throw away the tweezers, and if you are not blessed with naturally fuller brows, invest in a pencil or shadow that matches the roots of your hair.
The most important thing about the beauty look in each show was the models luminous, glowing skin. The backstage secret- preparation and time invested to achieve complexion perfection. As RESCU celebrity beauty expert Napoleon Perdis was heard preaching to the models: “Not to prime is a crime!” If you’re not genetically blessed like the hot new pack of models Samantha Harris, Montana and Eloise Boughton, then fake it with a great base like MAC Strobe Cream and a great powder highlighter on the cheek bones.

Final word
Most importantly, when choosing your summer looks don’t forget to have fun, invest in colour and florals (a stand out pair of shoes or a blazer is a great way to update your wardrobe without buying a whole new one) and when it comes to Sydney, don’t leave home without your sunscreen!
