Our SA blogger Q discovers Adelaide’s hottest food destinations
1. Doof Doof We Know Food Backwards
88-90 Duthy St Malvern / open 7 days a week
Doof Doof, supplies only organic produce and also has an onsite café with mouth watering offerings including a large variety of vegan and gluten free foods. The on site farmer’s market stocks selected organic products from small local producers including those from the 3 Adelaide Hill Properties farmed by the store owner, farmer and chef with 15 years of experience in commercial organic market gardening.
2. The Manse
142 Tynte St, North Adelaide
Offering both petite and grand degustation menus as well as a-la carte meals and taking out the 2010 awards for best fine diner, best restaurant and best chef is compulsory dining for any self respecting food lover visiting or residing in Adelaide. The food is described as both Modern Australian and Modern French, and while it has a classy elite reputation it is just as accessible to down-to-earth-ers as to a high budget regular. The accolades recently have been bestowed on a new and very young chef, Lachlan Cowill, just barely in his mid 20’s accompanied by a similarly young support staff, who freshen the aura of the place with their youthful energy.
3. Central Markets
Gouger Street, Adelaide / open Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday, with some stalls also open on Wednesdays
The Adelaide Central Markets is literally a feast for the senses and provides produce from most cultures infused into Adelaide society from over 80 stalls. The stalls stock everything from fruit and veggies (both native and exotic), seafood, meat, poultry and game, small goods, cheeses, confectionary, baked goods and nuts and is again a must visit, for anyone keen on either prepping or devouring great food.
4. China Town Café
38 Moonta Street (aka Chinatown) Adelaide
If you are prepared to stand in a line, be ordered to your table (there won’t be one free, trust me) in Seinfeld-Soup-Nazi-Style and sit at functional melamine no pizzazz tables, grabbing your own cutlery, chop sticks and condiments, whilst in line, you will be able to experience the best Laksa in Adelaide. Another favourite is the Vietnamese chicken curry. You need cash in your wallet; your plastic is no good here, but $10 will more than cover it. No dilly dallying or long leisurely lunches at Chinatown Café, it’s all about the food, so sit down, shut up and eat, it’s awesome.
5. Bracegirdle House of Fine Chocolate
locations in Glenelg, Toorak Gardens and McLaren Vale
Adelaide could not claim to be a foodie city without being the home to a House of Fine (Belgian) Chocolate. Employing chocolatiers who have been awarded gold awards in shows over the last 3 years and award winning Baristas to accompany your chocolate temptations with the perfect coffee means Bracegirdle has a well deserved reputation for providing chocolatey decadence to all who accidentally and then deliberately wander through their doors. For the serious connoisseurs there are coffee, chocolate and wine appreciation events, and for the rest of us, I highly recommend the fruit and chocolate fondue.
