Holidays in Wieden

Do you pore over every travel deal that drops into your inbox? Find yourself compulsively stalking travel hashtags? It's time for a break and Wieden, a neighbourhood in Vienna, is shouting your name. With around 1,700,000 people calling the capital of Austria home, you're bound to meet a few new mates during your journey. Wieden is 2 kilometres south of the city's centre. If you're landing in Vienna International Airport, dump your suitcase in the boot of a taxi and make your way 15 kilometres northwest.

With many of the city's top attractions nearby, Wieden is a dream for sightseers. From Schoenbrunn Palace to the Museum of Natural History, there's lots to keep visitors like yourself occupied. You should also make sure to experience Belvedere and Spanish Riding School. While you're here, consider going to other neighbourhoods to taste more of what Vienna offers. Kaerntner Strasse and Margareten are great suggestions that are a short distance away.

The centre of the city also offers a multitude of sights to appreciate, such as the Leopold Museum and Vienna State Opera. To get an even better feel for the area, also drop into the Albertina and Vienna City Hall.

Have some fun at the Casino Wien, the Concord Card Casino, the Montesino Casino and the Third Man Private Collection. They're excellent stops for those visiting without children in tow.

Michaelerplatz, the Museumsquartier and the Academy of Fine Arts are recommended for those eager to learn about the area's culture.

Sometimes an artwork can move you so much that you have to learn about its background. See if the staff can give you some information about the works at the Museum of Art History, the MAK, the Liechtenstein Museum and the Vienna House of the Arts.

Check for any special events that might be on before heading on over to see the displays and exhibits at the Jewish Museum, the Military History Museum, the Sigmund Freud Museum and the Vienna Technical Museum.

The mark of a good show tends to be how deafening the applause is when the curtains go down. Watch the audience rise to their feet at the Burgtheater, Musikverein, Volksoper Vienna and Konzerthaus.

Is your golf swing lacking oomph? Does your posture need some work? With outstanding greens like the Golf Club Wienerberg and the Golf Club Wien to play at, improving your handicap will be par for the course.

There's nothing like holidaying with energetic kids to keep you feeling youthful. Unleash the child within at the Austrian National Library, the Central Library, the Kindermuseum and Haus des Meeres.

Are you an animal lover? The playful critters at the Schoenbrunn Zoo and the Tiergarten make for an one-of-a-kind group photo!

Kids can get fed up with being dragged around various tourist sites. Fire them up with a few hours at one of the area's action-packed family attractions. The Riesenrad, Wurstelprater, Schoenbrunn Bad and Bogi Park are all worth checking out.

Nothing calms a busy mind quite like the sights, sounds and smells of nature. Immerse yourself in it at the Castle Garden, Danube Island, the Burggarten and the Alpengarten.

An appealing feature of this suburb is its nearby public parks. Amid all the activity, you won't struggle to find a place to relax and read a book. Wiener Prater, Viennese City Park, Augarten and Swiss Garden are some good options.

Sometimes the simplest way to get to know the locals is by heading to the shops. Make sure you call in to Naschmarkt, Euro Plaza, Ringstrassen Galerien and Karmeliter Market.

Step back through the mists of time at the Secession Building, Hofburg Imperial Palace, Donauturm and Hundertwasser House Vienna. These time-weathered sites have a collection of intriguing stories to share.

Whether you want to learn a little bit more about the region's spiritual side or just take in the peaceful surrounds, go to St. Stephen's Cathedral, St. Peter's Church, St. Charle's Church and Jesuit Church.
