History
Nambucca Heads is the home of the Gumbaynggir people and was named after the Aboriginal word for "entrance to the waters". It’s the centre of the Nambucca Valley. Nearby there are smaller towns like Macksville, a charming little place with parks and lily ponds, and Taylor’s Arm, the home of Slim Dusty’s famous ‘Pub with No Beer’.
Things to do
Want to learn to surf but don’t want to be sucked out to sea by a raging riptide? Nambucca Heads Beach has plenty of smaller waves to start you off on the slow and steady. Even better, it’s patrolled on weekends and summer holidays, which is great if you’re there with the kids. Nearby is secluded Beilby’s Beach, which has a peaceful bush walking track. Get some exercise with a power-walk along the Gulmani Boardwalk, which runs three kms along the foreshore of the Nambucca River, along parks and mangroves.
Nambucca Heads has some sweet public art, including a wall full of very creative graffiti. The Vee wall runs along the side of the estuary and has 500 metres of rocks painted with unique designs. Paint your own rock too if you want to explore your creative side! If you need some inspiration first, check out the Stringer Art Gallery at the Nambucca Entertainment Centre for some inspiration from the locals. Visit the Nambucca Headland Historical Museum to get a proper look at the history of the town.
Don’t mind a drive? Take a day trip with your BFFs to some of the national parks around the Nambucca Valley, like Dorrigo or Yarriabini, where you can find lush rainforest waterfalls and lookouts with superb views. All of that natural beauty – you know you want to!
