Holidays in Tachilek

Excellent! You've had your leave signed off. Now all you've gotta do is say goodbye to office life for a while and book your trip to Tachilek — ASAP!

It's located 410 kilometres east of Naypyidaw, the national capital of Myanmar.

Spend some time relaxing in nature at Doi Sa Ngo. It's located just 19 kilometres away from Tachilek. Breathe in the fresh air and take a few moments to simply slow down.

Travel 12 kilometres to the south and you'll stumble upon Mae Sai. It's popular for some fantastic sights, including the Wat Phra That Wai Dao and Mae Sai Shrine.

Do a bit of shopping and see some sights in Chiang Rai. This place is 65 kilometres to the south and quite close to the Wat Phra Kaew, the Wat Pra Singh and the Wat Phra That Doi Chom Thong. That being said, you shouldn't miss Central Plaza Chiangrai and the King Meng Rai the Great Monument either.

Few things marry utter exhilaration with peace and tranquility quite like hot air ballooning. Take to the skies and enjoy the passing scenery below.

From swimming to scuba diving, there's a range of ways to get your hair wet in Myanmar. Just don't forget to pack your sun cream!

The region's history museums, art galleries and craft workshops have something for all visitors. Step through the doors and check out what's happening.

On a clear, fine day make your way out to discover the surrounding area's open-air markets.

If you'd like to discover the region's past, why not check out one or two of its ruins and historic palaces? Do a bit of research beforehand to help fully understand their historical significance.

Learn about the area's religion and perhaps reconnect with your spiritual side by exploring one of Tachilek's temples and monasteries.

Whether you prefer the opulence of Michelin stars or devouring a snack from a street cart, sampling the local food and drink is perhaps the best thing about travel. So why not treat your taste buds by tucking into some of the region's appetising offerings?

Curious about some of the popular ingredients used in the local kitchens? Prepare to be served ngapi (fermented seafood) and a thoke (salads) in quite a few of your meals.

Don't pass up the opportunity to order a plate of tea leaf salad or shan-style rice (fish rice). These traditional meals are highly recommended by the locals.

A meal is never truly complete without dessert, so quit counting calories for a while and indulge in one of the most well-liked after-dinner treats, halawa (sticky rice, butter and coconut).

What better way to learn about the culture of a place than by involving yourself in a day of national celebration? There'll be many festivities arranged for Independence Day on the 21st of March.

Backed up security checkpoints, delayed flights and lost baggage. Airports are often very stressful places. Give yourself a bit of extra time to get to Chiang Mai International Airport (CNX). Situated 210 kilometres to the southwest, it's the nearest terminal.
