Holidays in Shibuya

Stop adulting for a bit. It's time to skip to that fun part of your life where you explore Tokyo! This lively city is crammed with surprises, and you'll find a good chunk of them hidden in neighbhourhoods like Shibuya. One of the best bits of travelling is the people you meet on the way. And with 8,300,000 people living in the capital of Japan, there's ample opportunity to gain some new BFFs. Shibuya is 5 kilometres west of the city centre. If you're coming in from Haneda Airport, dump your suitcase in the boot of a taxi and drive 14 kilometres northwest.

Shibuya is heaven on earth for sightseers. A good deal of the city's best attractions are dotted near this interesting neighbourhood, including Tokyo Tower and Tokyo Imperial Palace. After taking a look at those, you'll want to continue on to Meiji Jingu Shrine and Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building. For a different perspective on the city, take off to Dogenzaka and Takeshita Street, close-by neighbourhoods that you'll love exploring.

No holiday in Tokyo would be complete without venturing to Tokyo Sky Tree. As far as famous attractions go, it's up there with the best. It's situated just 6 kilometres from the downtown area.

There are endless reasons why so many people flock to the centre of Tokyo. Tsukiji Fish Market and Yasukuni Shrine are just a couple of them. To get an even better feel for the area, also stop by the Tokyo National Museum and Yoyogi Park.

Need a bit of time away from the little ones? Organise a babysitter and go to Nakajima Teahouse, Shinjuku I Land, Omoide Yokocho and the Japan Sake Center.

Deepen your knowledge of the area at the National Art Center Tokyo, the Laforet Museum, the Design Festa Gallery and the Fujifilm Square. These cultural places are not to be missed!

If you have an artistic flair, you shouldn't miss the Mori Art Museum, the Tokyo Metropolitan Teien Art Museum, the Nezu Art Museum and the Ota Memorial Museum of Art. Wander around and if anything impresses you, ask the staff for information about its creator.

Sometimes it's the star exhibits that catch our eye. Other times it's a small object sitting in a dim corner. Keep an eye out for both at the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography, Bridgestone Museum of Art, the Meguro Parasitological Museum and the Japanese Sword Museum.

Nothing beats the feeling of excitement when a show is about to get under way. Watch the curtains go up at the Kabuki-za Theatre, Suntory Hall, the Bunkamura and the New National Theatre Tokyo.

Locating kid-friendly attractions can be top priority when preparing for a family holiday. Keep an eye open for Shibuya Crossing, the Tokyo National Diet Library, Tokyo Tower Aquarium and Shinjuku Golden Gai.

Young kids can get restless on vacation. Thankfully, there are a handful of places in the local area you can take them to blow off some steam. Meiji-jingu Gaien Ice Skating Rink, National Children’s Castle, Rinshinomori Park and Toyomi Sports Park are some well-known choices.

The East Garden, the Koishikawa Korakuen Garden, the Happoen Garden and the Meiji-jingu Garden are perfect places for nature buffs to spend time outdoors.

Take a long walk at the Chinzan-so Garden, the Institute for Nature Study, the Shibuya Fureai Botanical Center and the Koishikawa Botanical Garden. If you're fortunate, you may even catch a glimpse of some of the local animals!

Whether you're itching to recharge your batteries a little bit or play a game of Frisbee with your friends, the nearby green spaces are wonderful places to be. Choose from either Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden, Hibiya-koen, Shinjuku Central Park and Hamarikyu Garden.

Quite often, the best way to get to know a new place is by strolling around the shops. Don't forget to drop in at Mitsukoshi, Omotesando Hills, Shinjuku Isetan and Isetan Department Store Shinjuku.

National Diet Building, Imperial Palace Garden, the Waseda University and the Keio University have many stories to tell. History nerd or not, you're sure to find out something at these weathered, old sites.

Places of worship such as St. Mary's Cathedral, the Zojoji Temple, Hanazono Shrine and the Sengakuji Temple can provide you with a deeper understanding of the region's religious side. Immerse yourself in the peaceful atmosphere and take a little time to think.
