Hotels In Sha Tin

How about a cultural immersion in Hong Kong? Stay in one of our Shatin hotels and you'll place yourself at arm's length from the hustle and bustle of Hong Kong Island's skyscrapers and be able to check out some awesome temples and museums instead.

History

Shatin and the rest of the New Territories were handed over to the British in 1898 under a 99 year lease. After the lease was up, Hong Kong was returned to the People's Republic of China but granted a separate system of government administration. During the lease, Shatin was mostly just a country town until the 1970s when a public housing estate was built. Since then, it has expanded and developed into the unusual, cultural hub that is so attractive to inquisitive travelers today.

Things to do

Shin Mung River runs right through the middle of town and you might get the chance to watch some dragon boat racing if you go for a walk or cycle along the riverside tracks. After a relaxing stroll, how about hitting Shatin Racecourse, which is always popular with punters? Even if you're not into horse racing, you'll still enjoy the lovely green park that's smack bang in the middle of the racecourse. Penfold Park is home to some gorgeous gardens, statues and pieces of artwork, so don't forget to bring your camera.

Keen to hit the cultural sites? Don't miss the Hong Kong Heritage Museum, the Chinese History Art Museum or the Che Kung Taoist Temple. The Ten Thousand Buddhas Monastery, which isn't technically a monastery and actually has 12,800 golden Buddha statues, is also definitely worth a visit. Even if you aren't the spiritual type, the statues offer a really good opportunity to take some unique snaps as you climb up the 431 steps to the main temples and pagoda. The entire complex was built between 1949 and 1957 and the founder, Reverend Yuet Kai, is embalmed inside a glass case at the main altar. Not creepy at all!

Shopping and Dining

Shopaholics will be kept entertained and well-fed at New Town Plaza and Home Square Mall, where

Hong Kong's largest IKEA store is located. Throughout the city, you'll find restaurants and food vendors serving up all sorts of cuisines to suit every palate and budget and there are also plenty of places to kick back with a drink in the evening.

Getting here and around

Make your way here by grabbing a seat on one of these cheap flights to Hong Kong and then get around hassle-free by train. Can't get much simpler than that!

So, don't delay your escape into Hong Kong's fascinating cultural side any longer! Book your Shatin accommodation with us now and live every lastminute!
