Holidays in San Carlos

Awake in the wee small hours? Can't get back to sleep? Could be that intrepid spirit of yours! So what's stopping you? Get up, dust off your passport and book a ticket to San Carlos!

It lies 200 kilometres southeast of Managua, the nation's capital.

Does picnicking by the sea sound like one of the best ideas yet? Pay a visit to Santo Domingo Beach, 100 kilometres to the northwest.

Spend a day kicking back at Reserva Privada El Quebracho. It's situated just 30 kilometres away from San Carlos. Fill your lungs with the fresh air and take a few moments to unwind.

Take a trip back to another era as you stroll around San Carlos Fort. This historical site has plenty of stories to tell.

Head 19 kilometres to the south and you'll stumble upon Los Chiles. It's known for some recommended sights, such as Cano Negro National Wildlife Refuge and Rio Frio Marina.

Whether it's for a spot of shopping or to take in the sights, visitors often make their way to La Fortuna, 75 kilometres to the south. Baldi Hot Springs, La Fortuna Waterfall and Los Lagos Hot Springs are all close at hand. That said, don't miss Ecotermales Fortuna and Termales Los Laureles either.

Clothes? Check. Wallet? Check. But have you brought your appetite? With some delicious food and drink to devour in this part of the world, it's the one thing you shouldn't forget.

Once you stop and flick through a restaurant or café menu, you'll quickly discover that beans and salad are a couple of ingredients commonly used in local cooking.

When in San Carlos, dine like a local. That means tucking into a plate of vigorón (cabbage salad) or tortillas, a couple of the region's classic recipes.

If a life without dessert doesn't seem like a life worth living, you should definitely spoil yourself with some pio quinto (rum-drenched cake). This sweet treat sums up the area in just one bite.

If you truly want to see the big pitcher, take the hopportunity to throw back a beer. Schooner rather than later! Dorky beer puns aside, make sure you order Premium, one of the most popular local brews.

Seeking something with a little more bite? Be sure to try vodka. Ask your barkeeper if it's nice in any mixed drinks or cocktails. Failing that, pick up a shot glass and drink it down straight!

Make use of your transit time by memorising a couple of local expressions. '¡Hola!' may be very useful. It's how you say 'hello'. Maybe you'll find '¡Que pase un buen día!' is a bit easier to roll off the tongue? This means 'have a nice day'.

Want to participate in the Independence Day celebrations? Mark down the 15th of September in your travel diary and get ready to let loose!

When it finally comes time to leave, spend the last of your holiday allowance and wave "Adiós" to San Carlos.
