Mount Gambier is actually located on the extinct Maar Volcano, which has three lakes inside its crater, including the famous Blue Lake. Go for a walk around the perimeter of the Blue Lake or take to the skies for a bird's eye view of the mysterious body of water. This gorgeous lake is usually a sombre blue, but between November and February, it's a deep turquoise colour and looks incredible in photos, so be sure to check it out.
There are plenty of parks and bush tracks that you can follow around the town but make sure you visit the Cave Garden, at least once, to see the beautiful waterfall, peer inside the cave and smell the roses along the pathway. Then, hotfoot it to the nearby Wildlife Park and Boardwalk to see some native Aussie animals.Shopping and dining
Mount Gambier is home to some excellent art galleries, so if you're after a unique piece of artwork, you're sure to find something special here. Or if you're looking for something a bit different, head to the Mount Gambier Rotary Community Market on a Saturday, to pick up some local handicrafts, or grab some fresh produce at the Mount Gambier Farmers' Market on Saturday morning.
Once you've worked up an appetite, you'll be able to satisfy it with some succulent seafood, gorgeous berries and gourmet cheeses in one of the elegant restaurants in town. However, if you'd prefer something a bit more casual, you can opt for a bite to eat in a humble eatery, bakery or pub.Getting here and around
