The country's capital, San Salvador, sits approximately 45 kilometres to the northeast of Mizata.

Spend an hour or two strolling along the shoreline at Playa San Blas or Sunzal Beach.

You won't have to travel too far to find some superb natural sights. Dig out your car keys and follow the road to Walter Thilo Deininger National Park, 35 kilometres away from Mizata, for a laid-back day. Or perhaps Volcano El Boqueron looks more appealing? It's situated just 40 kilometres away.

Don't just watch sport on the telly, feel it, live it and enjoy it at Estadio Cuscatlan! Located 45 kilometres away in San Salvador, it's the ideal place to get your fix whether you're going for the home or away team.

We recommend jumping in a car and heading to Acajutla. It's approximately 25 kilometres to the west and popular for the Port of Acajutla and Acajutla Botanical Park.

Travellers often head over to Suchitoto. This destination is 75 kilometres away and not too far from Santa Lucia Church, the Art Center for Peace and Shanay. If you're planning to stay a little while, don't miss Casa del Escultor and Salto El Cubo.

Are you keen on watersports? Add a little more excitement to your escape with a bit of swimming or surfing.

We're not sure how they managed to cram so much into the region's history museums. Step through the doors and find out what they've got on offer.

If you're a history enthusiast, take the time to discover the region's ruins. Do some research beforehand or enlist the services of the closest tour guide.

Get to know the area in a more spiritual way by paying a visit to its churches. Take a minute or two for your own quiet reflection or simply observe the locals in prayer.

Whether you prefer the sophistication of Michelin stars or wolfing down a snack from a street stall, tasting the local food and drink is one of the best things about travelling. So why not tempt your taste buds by trying some of the area's delicious offerings?

Are you a fan of chicken? How about beef? Whether you're crazy about them or not, they are two key ingredients regularly used in the cooking here.

Don't miss the chance to dig into a plate of tipico salvadoreno (eggs, cheese, tortillas) or casamiento (rice and black beans). These popular dishes are what El Salvador is all about.

You may be eating your way into a larger pair of trousers, but pastelitos (small stuffed pastries) is more than worth it. This well-known dessert will make your taste buds tingle at the sight of it.

Neat, on ice, in a cocktail — doesn't matter! A couple of shots of vinagre de piña (fermented pineapples and water) ought to add some fire to your night out! It's a favourite with locals, and it's most definitely worth trying.

Work on the language barrier by memorising a few words in the local tongue. You'll gain a more fulfilling, authentic experience and a few new buddies while you're at it! Firstly, try to pronounce 'Muchas gracias'. It translates to 'thank you'. 'Buenas noches' ('good evening') is one more you may need.

When you stay at Mizata in Teotepeque, you'll be on the beach and 11 minutes by car from Dorada Beach.
"My girlfriend and I stayed for one night in the Tree House Room. Upon arrival we noticed that there was very limited parking so we parked our car along the dirt road next to the resort. We both had a great time there and were warmly greeted by staff. The price is steep. Beautiful sunsets."
