Venture out of Minamiyamashiro and be prepared to experience some unique natural attractions. Just 25 kilometres away, Akame Shijuhachitaki Falls is an excellent spot to get a little fresh air. We also suggest Yoshino-Kumano National Park, 45 kilometres away from Minamiyamashiro.

There's nothing more exciting than the atmosphere of live soccer! Watch the Kyoto Sanga FC compete on their home turf at Nishikyogoku Athletic Stadium, an impressive venue 35 kilometres away in Kyoto.

Whether you want to challenge yourself on steep slopes or just get to the bottom in one piece, Kyoto has the slopes you're after. Make you way to either Rokkosan Ski Area or Biwako Valley Ski Resort.

Into stopping by the Joruri Temple and the Enjo-ji Temple? They're not far from the centre of Kasagi, 5 kilometres to the west. Alternatively, you could head to Soraku-gun. It's 6 kilometres to the west of Minamiyamashiro and known for the Gansenji Temple and the Kaijyusenji Temple.

You may have the urge to stay in Tenri for a little while. This destination is 25 kilometres to the southwest and close to the Kurozuka Kofun Museum, the Chogakuji Temple and Isonokami Jingu Shrine. Other nearby sights are the Koninji Temple and Momonoo-no Taki.

'There is no love sincerer than the love of food,' George Bernard Shaw once said, but throw travel into the mix and it's a marriage made in heaven. You're invited to indulge in two of your biggest loves by eating and drinking your way around Kyoto.

Beef and noodles are just a couple of typical ingredients found in many dishes here. If you don't have an appetite for them already, you may by the end of your visit!

You don't need to spend all night reading through the menu while in Minamiyamashiro. Just dive straight in and try some of the regional specialties, such as tempura (deep fried seafood or vegetables) and yudofu (tofu simmered with kelp).

A meal is never truly complete without dessert, so quit calorie counting and tuck into one of the most well-liked sweet treats, anpan (sweet roll).

It can be tough to separate the wheat from the chaff when it comes to quality beers, but one must-try brew is Asahi Premium Beer Jukusen. Grab a glass and drink up!

Thirsty for something a little more potent? Then take a sip of junmaishu. Ask the bar person if it's nice in any cocktails. Failing that, request a shot glass and drink it neat!

Ask any experienced globetrotter and they'll tell you that the simplest way to get the most from your getaway is to try out a few local words and phrases. 'Gomen nasai' may be very useful. It's how you say 'sorry'. Perhaps you'll find 'お誕生日おめでとうございます(otanjōbi omedetō gozaimasu)' easier to say? It means 'happy birthday'.

Don't forget to pencil the 23rd of December in your calendar. In Minamiyamashiro this means just one thing — Birthday of Emperor Akihito. A prominent day of festivities, this is a great time of year to head to the country.
