HistoryMagnetic Island has been a popular holiday destination for many years, loved by international guests and Aussie tourists alike. Before this, the island was home to European settlers, and , various Aboriginal groups lived on the island even earlier. The name came from a strange magnetic effect said to have occurred on the compass of Captain Cook’s ship when he was passing by.
Things to doMagnetic Island National Park is the perfect place for hiking, climbing, and nature spotting – covering over half of the island, gorgeous natural scenery is never too far away! With a large koala population, it is also one of the best places in the whole of Australia for watching these furry cute critters in the wild. Relax on the sandy beaches and swim in the deliciously cool ocean. The waters are also teeming with fish, so it’s great for keen fishing enthusiasts. Picnic Bay Jetty is another great spot for chilling out. A couple of old fortresses from World War II provide historical sightseeing and a number of spas and beauty salons mean that relaxing at the end of a busy day is made even more special. There are several celebrations on the island throughout the year, and if you’re around for the full moon, you’re in for a real treat!
