Holidays in Kainantu

Armchair travelling not cutting it these days? Want to experience the real thing? Kainantu is the perfect place to start. It sits among the gorgeous rural landscapes and beaches of Papua New Guinea. (You'll have to sidestep the well-trodden tourist trail, but that's what travelling is all about, right?)

It's located 380 kilometres to the northwest of Papua New Guinea's capital, Port Moresby.

The close-by localities of Kamina and Sim are worth going to. They're located 50 kilometres west and 50 kilometres southwest away, respectively. Jump in a car and find out what's happening!

You may feel the urge to set up camp in Goroka for a bit. This place is 60 kilometres to the northwest and close to the J.K. McCarthy Museum, the Raun Raun Theatre and Mount Gahavisuka Provincial Park. Other nearby attractions are Mt Kis Lookout and Lake Kutubu.

If you're after something a bit more engaging, take a look at the local mountain climbing options. Or perhaps hiking is more your thing? Whichever you decide, you're bound to have a fun time.

Unsure what to see and do first? Often the best way to take it all in is to book a couple of tours. The region boasts interesting guided nature walks and wildlife spotting tours.

From snorkeling to swimming, there's a range of ways to get out on the water in Papua New Guinea. Just don't forget to bring your sunscreen!

Spend some time inside experiencing the hidden wonders of the region's craft workshops.

On a fine day, make your way out to discover the surrounding area's open-air markets.

If you'd love to discover the region's past, why not plan an outing to some of the nearby war relics and monuments? Do a bit of research beforehand to get some insight into their historical value.

Clothing? Check. Passport? Check. But have you packed your appetite? With some delectable food and drink to indulge in in this destination, it's the one thing you won't want to travel without.

Breadfruit (ulu) and coconuts are two common ingredients found in many dishes here. If you don't love them already, you might by the end of your getaway!

While you're in Kainantu, dine like a local. That means tucking into a plate of chicken pot or kokoda fish, a couple of the area's signature dishes.

Dinner isn't complete without dessert, so give up counting calories and get stuck into one of the best sweet treats, saksak (dumplings made with sugar and sago).

Celebrated throughout the whole country, Independence Day happens on the 16th of September. If you find yourself here on this important day, it'll be difficult not to get swept up in the excitement!

Time to go home from the fantastic Papua New Guinea region? You might only have a handful of Papua New Guinean kinas left in your pocket, but you'll be rich in incredible experiences.

When it's time to pack up your bags and hit the skies, the nearest terminal, Jackson International Airport (POM), is 380 kilometres to the southeast.

"Did not respect reservation. I had to make last minute changes to find a new hotel during the most busy weekend in Goroka during the Goroka Show.
