Holiday In Johannesburg

Where can you go on holiday to mingle with the king of the jungle, pretend to be an art connoisseur and shop in a mall, all in one day?

Probably nowhere, except for Johannesburg, South Africa.

The largest city in the country and the biggest city in the world not near a major body of water is a great place for your next trip. Aside from the lions and art, there’s also a number of history museums, a major theme park and huge flea markets. Check out our fantastic deals on Johannesburg holiday packages and be on your way!

Things to Do in Johannesburg

Wow, this place is big. Get behind the wheel of one of lastminute.com.au’s Johannesburg car hire options and make the 47-kilometre drive north to the Lion Park. You can cruise right into the park to see the giant cats up close and personal! We can’t believe we have to say this, but please keep your windows up. You’d be surprised how many people like to roll them down for a “closer look”. Simba might have seemed friendly in The Lion King, but he and his cohorts can be a little testy in real life.

Hopefully you left the lion park in one piece, or the rest of your Johannesburg holiday will be missing something. Come back to the city and check out the Johannesburg Art Gallery in Joubert Park. Walk through the 15 exhibition halls and sculpture gardens to get a glimpse of some pretty wild art. Good luck interpreting what it means.

Shopping, Dining & Nightlife

Are you ready to go shopping yet? Head to the African Craft Market at Rosebank and take your pick of souvenirs from the dozens of market stalls lining the streets. Get your hands on a vuvuzela, a long horn that makes a buzzing sound. Remember the noise from the 2010 World Cup? Yeah, that thing. And don’t forget to grab a hand-carved wooden tribal mask. It’ll tie your wall together.

When you’re on holiday in Johannesburg, you’re going to get hungry. The Parkhurst market area is full of small cafes that are perfect for a cup of java and a snack. A real up-and-coming neighbourhood for restaurants is Kensington. This is where you come if you’re looking for droewors, bobotie and isidudu—yes, this (dried sausage, spiced minced meat and pumpkin curry, respectively) is a mouthful to say and eat.

When you want to go out for an evening on the town, a great place to mingle with the locals is in the Sandton area, an upscale region of the city. After pub-hopping through this ’hood, cruise to Rivonia, the next suburb over. This is where you’re going to want to be if you’re looking for a nightclub with music pulsating through the walls. A lot of the hotels you get with our Johannesburg packages are near this area, so stumbling home will be a piece of cake.

What’s Next?

It’s time to go to the ends of the earth. Well, not really, but at least to the end of the African continent. Browse our great deals on cheap holidays to Johannesburg and see if you can become a pro lion tamer! We’re kidding about that last part.
