Holidays in Grunerlokka

Do you look at every travel deal that lands in your inbox? Find yourself fanatically stalking travel hashtags? It's time for an escape and Grunerlokka, a neighbourhood in Oslo, is yelling your name. One of the best parts of travelling is the people you meet on the way. And with 600,000 locals living in the capital of Norway, there's ample opportunity to meet a few new BFFs. To get to Grunerlokka from Gardermoen Airport, grab a taxi, throw your luggage in the boot and travel 35 kilometres to the southwest. If you're coming from the city centre, you'll need to travel 2 kilometres northeast.

With many of the city's best attractions close by, Grunerlokka is a wonderland for sightseers. From Royal Palace to Oslo Opera House, you aren't going to run out of things to keep you entertained. You should also be sure to experience the Munch Museum and the Viking Ship Museum. While you're here, think about visiting some other neighbourhoods to experience more of what Oslo offers. Gronland and St. Hanshaugen are great recommendations that are nearby.

Grunerlokka is not far from Gustav Vigeland Sculpture Park, an internationally renowned sight that draws in visitors from around the globe. It can be found just 4 kilometres to the west.

If you wouldn't mind browsing a few of the highlights in central Oslo, make sure you include Parliament and the National Gallery. Don't go back to your hotel room without having a look around the Kon Tiki Museum and Frogner Park as well.

Mathallen Oslo, Honse-Lovisas Hus, Alna Equestrian Center and the Rignes Brewery are ideal for those without any kids in tow.

Keen to give the noggin a workout? The Oslo Ladegard, the CAK Center for African Culture, the Mini Bottle Gallery and the Bygdelagssamskipnaden are some recommended cultural sites.

If you possess a keen interest in the arts, don't forget to visit the Vigeland Museum, the Museum For Contemporary Art, the International Museum of Childrens Art and the Astrup Fearnley Museum of Modern Art. Walk around and if one of the works grabs your attention, ask the staff for information about its creator.

From interactive exhibits to impressive objects and artefacts, museums have something to keep everyone interested. If the weather turns nasty, why not make your way over to the Nobel Peace Center, the Fram Museum, the Norwegian Resistance Museum and the Holmenkollen Ski Museum?

Witnessing a top-notch performance can be an exhilarating experience. Book a seat at the National Theater, Oslo Spektrum, Rockefeller Music Hall and the Norwegian Theatre for an unforgettable night out.

Children are often marvellous travel mates, especially if you go to fun places! For an entertaining family day out, head to the National Library, the Cinemateket and Round Bygdoy.

Young ones can get bored of sightseeing. Give them a lift with a trip to one of the local areas action-packed family attractions. Hopp i Havet, the Harald Huysman Karting, Toyenbadet Public Bath and Frognerbadet Open-Air Public Bath are well worth checking out.

Step outdoors and appreciate the views at the Palace Park, Langoyene, Hovedoya and Ekebergparken Sculpture Park.

Put on some comfortable shoes and walk around the nearby natural reserves, such as the Oslo Botanic Garden, Ostensjovannet Nature Reserve and Ostensjovannet Naturreservat.

Whether you'd like to relax with a book or play a game of Frisbee with your friends, the nearby urban parks are great places to be. Take your pick from Birkelunden, St. Hanshaugen Park, Toyen Park and Sofienberg Park.

There's nothing like treating yourself to a bit of shopping. Grab your wallet and make your way to Oslo City Shopping Centre, Byporten Shopping Centre and Storo Storsenter.

Akershus Fortress, the Aker Brygge, Oslo City Hall and Henrik Ibsen Museum have many tales to tell. History geek or not, you'll be sure to find out something at these age-old sites.

Whether you want to learn some more about the region's customs and traditions or just soak up the peaceful surrounds, head to Oslo Cathedral, Old Aker Church, Sagene Church and Holmenkollen Chapel.

There's nothing more enjoyable in winter than crisscrossing down a hill on your snowboard. Grab your gear and head up to Oslo Ski Center and Varingskollen Alpine Center.

No stay here is complete without catching a game at Ullevaal Stadium, home to the Norway National Team and Valerenga Football. If it's match day when you're in town, slip on your favourite team's colours and get set to enthusiastically cheer them on.
