As all travellers know — a life full of new adventures is a life well-lived. So dig out your passport, pack your gear and say hello to Fangshan!
One of the region's most famed attractions is Kenting National Park. See it for yourself in Hengchun, 35 kilometres to the south of Fangshan.
Make sure you bring a picnic hamper packed with goodies so you can enjoy lunch by the water at Nan Wan Beach or Tapaisha Beach.
Go beyond Fangshan and you'll come across some lovely natural sights. Just 35 kilometres away, Sheding Nature Park is a fabulous spot to soak up some sunshine. You also can't lose with Dapeng Bay National Scenic Area, 30 kilometres away from Fangshan.
If you head 19 kilometres south from Fangshan, you'll stumble upon Checheng. Some travellers like to use this as a base to check out National Museum of Marine Biology and Aquarium and the Hengchun Old Town West Gate.
Roughly 70 kilometres to the northeast, Taitung is a destination with plenty to do. The National Museum of Prehistory, the Taitung Railway Art Village and the Fu An Gong are all quite close. That said, the Haishan Temple and Tiehuacun may be more your style.
There is no better way to get to know a place than to literally sink your teeth into it! You're invited to explore the culture, history and personality of Pingtung County by trying some of its best food and drink.
An essential ingredient in the food here is pork. One more is chicken. Give them a go if they're not a part of your food repertoire already.
Of course, you can't head home from Fangshan without introducing your taste buds to niu rou mian (beef noodle soup) or lu rou fan (minced pork on rice). Popular with residents and considered signature dishes, they are a must-try experience for any self-respecting food lover.
A meal is never truly complete without dessert, so stop worrying about counting calories for a while and savour one of the most lip-smacking after-dinner treats, moji (rice cake).
It can be difficult to sort the wheat from the chaff when it comes to good beers, but one brew worth knocking back is Taiwan. Grab a glass and drink up!
If your night out demands something with a bit more of a punch, try kaoliang. Neat or on the rocks — your barkeeper ought to know the most delicious way to drink it.
Do you like talking about the structure, texture and balance of a delicious glass of wine? Or do you prefer to rip the cork out and just drink it? Golden muscat and shaoxing are what you need to ask for here.
You may be poor in New Taiwan dollars when it's time for your trip to end, but you'll be rich in incredible experiences. "Zàijiàn" Fangshan!
Fangshan's closest terminal is Kaohsiung International Airport (KHH). When it's time to pack up your bags and hit the skies, travel 50 kilometres to the northwest.
