Holidays in Dongdan

Leave your job, buy a ticket, get a tan, fall in love, never return. You don't have to do all of those things, but one you should do is secure that ticket to Dongdan. One of the many neighbourhoods of Beijing, it's a fabulous base for discovering everything this city has to offer. The capital of China is home to 11,700,000 people. Don't be scared to get out and make friends with a few of them! Dongdan is 3 kilometres east of central Beijing. If you're arriving via Nanyuan Airport, toss your bag in the back of a taxi and drive 14 kilometres north.

This city has no shortage of awesome things to do, and many of them are found near Dongdan. It's a challenge to choose the best sights, but Tiananmen Square and Forbidden City are a couple you really shouldn't miss. Don't forget to put the Temple of Heaven and Beihai Park on your schedule too. A brilliant way to soak up this city is to wander around a few of its neighbourhoods. So why not make your way to nearby Wangfujing Shopping Area and Dengshikou and explore their sights and sounds?

If you're up for seeing some of the highlights in the city centre, head to the CCTV Headquarters and the Great Hall of the People. You can't leave the area without dropping into the Lama Temple and the Tiananmen as well.

Need a bit of time away from the little ones? Find a babysitter and head out to Lao She Teahouse and Yugong Yíshan.

The Green T. House Art Gallery, the Pace, the China Art Gallery and the Creation Art Gallery are recommended for those looking to learn more about the local culture.

Nothing stills the mind and stirs the imagination like spending time in an art gallery. Spark your curiosity as you view the fascinating works on display at the National Art Museum of China, the Capital Museum, the Today Art Museum and the Treasure Gallery.

Sometimes it's the most talked about exhibits that impress us the most. Other times it's a forgotten artefact sitting in a darkly lit corner. Keep an eye out for both at the Beijing Museum of Natural History, the Mei Lanfang Memorial Museum, the Beijing Lu Xun Museum and the Beijing Ancient Architecture Museum.

Witnessing a top-notch performance can be an exhilarating experience. Reserve a seat at the Chaoyang Theater, the National Centre for the Performing Arts, the Tiandi Theater and the Tianqiao Acrobatics Theatre for a memorable night out.

Finding kid-friendly entertainment is a top priority when going on a family holiday. Don't miss the Beijing Wax Museum, Gongti Richina Underwater World and the Imperial Archives.

Kids can't spend all day sightseeing. Give them a break and take them to one or two of the area's family-friendly attractions. They can choose from Jingshan Table Tennis Park and Tuanjiehu Park.

Nothing soothes the mind like the sounds, sights and smells of nature. Experience it firsthand at Tongzi River, Honglingjin Park, Beijing West Lakes and Shicha Lake Park.

Whether you're in the mood to recharge your batteries a little bit or play a game of Frisbee with your friends, the nearby green spaces are charming places to be. Your options include Ditan Park, Jingshan Park, Chaoyang Park and Ritan Park.

There's nothing quite like treating yourself to a bit of retail therapy. Give your wallet a workout at Hongqiao Market, Yashow Market, Silk Street Market and Panjiayuan Antique Market.

Chairman Mao Memorial Hall, the Bell and Drum Towers, the China Museum of History and the Zhengyangmen can give you a glimpse back into the past.

Learn about the region's spiritual dimensions at the Houhai Park, the Temple of Confucius, St. Joseph's Cathedral and the Niujie Mosque. These attractions are worth checking out whether you're religious or not.
