Holidays in Chinatown

FOMO, wanderlust, fernweh. Whatever you call it, there’s only one way to cure it — take off to Chinatown. No matter what type of awesome adventures you want to have, this Kuala Lumpur neighbourhood has plenty going for it. The capital of Malaysia is home to some 1,500,000 people and a fantastic place to experience the nation's culture and history. Once you've stepped off the plane at Kuala Lumpur International Airport and plucked your suitcase from the carousel, Chinatown will be a drive of 45 kilometres to the north. From the city's centre, it's 2 kilometres to the west.

With a good deal of the city's top attractions close by, Chinatown is a sightseer's paradise. From Petronas Twin Towers to Petaling Street, you won't run out of things to keep you on the go. The gotta-see sights of Merdeka Square and Malaysian Houses of Parliament are also on your doorstep. A brilliant way to take in this city is to roam around some of its neighbourhoods. So why not swing by nearby Bukit Bintang and Golden Triangle and explore their unique charms?

Batu Caves is one of those sights that needs to be seen to be believed. Located just 11 kilometres from the city centre, you're not going to have any excuse to skip it.

Searching for some inspiration on things to do in the city centre? Two sensational places to start are Kuala Lumpur Tower and Pavilion Kuala Lumpur. To get an even better feel for your surrounds, also call in at the Lake Gardens and the Jamek Mosque.

Really let your hair down at the Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club and the Royal Selangor Club. They're perfect stops for those travelling without children.

Keen to experience the cultural scene? Try the National Art Gallery, the Kuala Lumpur City Gallery, the Shalini Ganendra Fine Art and the Malaysia Heritage Walk.

Regional galleries like the Islamic Arts Museum and the Asian Art Museum show off the creative side of the region. Why not see if there are any upcoming openings and discover some of the amazing works?

Sometimes it's the biggest and best exhibits that catch our eye. Other times it's an overlooked gem that's been relegated to a dimly lit corner. Keep an eye out for both at National Science Centre, the Bank Negara Money Museum, Pusat Sains Negara National Science Center and the Royal Malaysian Police Museum.

One of the yardsticks of an exceptional performance is often how loud the applause is when it's finished. See the audience rise to their feet at the Palace of Culture, the DBKL City Theatre, the Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre and Petronas Filharmonik Hall.

Is your golf swing a little wonky? Does your posture need some work? With brilliant fairways like the Kelab Golf Perkhidmatan Awam, the Titiwangsa Golf Course and the Royal Selangor Golf Club to tee off at, improving your game will be par for the course.

The animals of the world come in all sorts of shapes and sizes. Watch a number of them forage for food, doze and muck about at Kuala Lumpur Bird Park, Kuala Lumpur Deer Park and the Sentul Park Koi Centre.

Children don't want to spend all day cooped up in a hotel room. Give them a real treat and take them to one of the local fun-filled attractions. They can choose from Titiwangsa Lake Gard. and Desa Waterpark.

Venture outdoors and delight in landscapes at Gasing Hill, Asean Sculpture Garden and Gabai Waterfalls.

Discover a diverse range of native plants and creatures at Bukit Nanas Forest Reserve and the Perdana Botanical Garden.

Prepare a delicious picnic and gather some friends for an afternoon in one of the wonderful green spaces nearby. Take your pick from KLCC Park, Butterfly Park, Orchid & Hibiscus Gardens and Taman Tasik Ampang Hilir.

Stock up on the essentials or look for a few unusual mementos. Find everything you need at Mid Valley Mega Mall, Suria KLCC Shopping Centre, Central Market and Bangsar Village.

Slip into some black and yellow and join the masses of spirited soccer fans with an unconditional love for the Malaysia national football team. All the excitement happens at Bukit Jalil National Stadium, which is not too far from Chinatown.
