The nation's capital, Beijing, is 1,500 kilometres northeast of Chengdu. Dayi County lies 55 kilometres to the west.

Want to have some quality time with the kids? The whole family is sure to have a blast at Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding.

Walking around the manicured garden beds and botanic exhibits at the Dayi Botanical Garden feels like drifting through a vibrant fairyland.

Renmin Park and Yong Ling are the ideal places to catch some sun, have a picnic or just sit and people-watch. There's also plenty of fun to be had at Tanghu Park and Sculpture Park.

At Chaoyang Lake and Lihua River you can go for an easy walk around the waterline or just appreciate the scenery from the shore. If you're feeling extra energetic, you might even want to see if there are any open-water sports taking place. To spot any additional wildlife, it's also worth swinging by Yanxia Lake and Wenjing River.

Put on some comfy walking shoes and prepare for adventure. There are a number of nature reserves around this area that are just waiting to be enjoyed. The fresh, crisp air and natural surroundings at Mount Qingcheng and Pujiang Grottoes are as invigorating as it gets. Tiantai Mountain and Chonggu Mountain are two more that are worth a look.

Ask the friendly staff at the Sichuan Cuisine Museum or the Dujiangyan Museum about special events. With so many captivating exhibits, you'll want to make sure you don't miss out on anything. QiongLai MinSuGuan and LiuWenHui JiuJu ChenLieGuan are also decent alternatives.

The science geeks among us will be in their natural habitat at the Sichuan Museum of Science and Technology. Showcasing even more fascinating innovations, the artefacts and displays at the Museum of Old Medicine are sure to stimulate your curiosity.

It can be both mystifying and thrilling to see just how diverse the creations of the natural world are. See them all in one convenient location at the Chengdu Ethnographic Museum.

If you consider yourself a history lover, explore the absorbing exhibits that bring to life people and events of the past at the Du Fu Caotang. The Jīnshā Site Museum and the WenJun Jiu Shi ChenLieGuan are two more sites which aim to collect, preserve and share the rich heritage of this region.

Stopping at significant historical sights is a wonderful way to get a real understanding of bygone times. Experience Chengdu's past at the Sichuan University and the Southwest Jiaotong University. If that's not enough to satisfy your inner history nerd, extend your sightseeing to Jinsha Museum and the Jianchuan Museum.

Anlan Bridge is a timeless landmark here. While locals may seem to take it for granted, many visitors are quite impressed by this physical memory of a time long since passed.

If you find it difficult keeping up with the Joneses, consider for a second the poor neighbours of Qingyang Palace. The impressive façade and opulent interior of this stately dwelling would be near impossible to beat!
