Holidays in Bora

Longing to get away from it all? Can't stop following hashtags like #BeautifulDestinations? Then book your ticket to Bora and take a trip through the breathtaking beaches, forests and mountains of Okinawa.

It's located 1,850 kilometres to the southwest of Tokyo, the capital of Japan.

Maebama Beach and Sunayama Beach are perfect to visit if you're looking for somewhere to kick back and relax.

There is a variety of interesting natural attractions surrounding Bora. Why not travel 5 kilometres to East Henna Cape? Alternatively, appreciate some of nature's finest artwork at Kurima-jima Island, 16 kilometres away.

Don't be surprised if you encounter many fellow travellers at the Miyakojima Treasure Museum.

Miyako Island, 12 kilometres to the northwest, is home to the Hisamatsugoyushi Monument and Miyakojima Marine Park. Why not make your way there and check out these popular attractions? Or, you could head to Irabu, 25 kilometres to the northwest of Bora, for Makiyama Observatory and Miyako Shrine.

A fine day is a perfect opportunity to venture outside and spend a few leisurely hours cycling. If the nice weather stays, also try sunbathing.

Let someone else take care of the planning as you mingle with fellow travellers on guided nature walks, cycling tours, city walking tours and culinary tours.

Not only is sky diving an incredible way to get sweeping views of the scenery below, it also promises thrills, exhilaration and the opportunity to soar like a bird!

Sure, it's nice to be alongside the water, but it's going to be way more fun to be in or on it! Don't miss your chance to have a go at the region's popular watersports, such as swimming and snorkeling.

Spend some time wandering around the hidden wonders of the region's art museums, nature museums, history museums, art galleries, theaters, indoor markets and palaces.

Pack your sunglasses and head to one of the surrounding area's lovely outdoor attractions. Its open-air museums, farms, open-air markets and gardens are waiting to be explored.

If you'd like to better understand the region's past, why not explore a few of its ruins, castles, traditional villages, historic palaces and war relics and monuments? Do a bit of research beforehand to get an idea of their historical value.

Whether or not you believe in a higher power, exploring one or two of the surrounding temples and shrines is a terrific opportunity to learn a bit about the area's religion.

Whether you enjoy the sophistication of Michelin stars or nibbling on a snack from a street stall, sampling the local food and drink is one of the best things about travel. So why not treat your taste buds by tucking into some of the area's delicious offerings?

Want some insight into the regional cuisine? We suggest you get a taste for beef and noodles, two traditional ingredients which make up some of the dishes here.

There's no need to agonise over the restaurant menu while in Bora. Just jump straight in and devour the area's specialties, such as tempura (deep fried seafood or vegetables) and hakata ramen (noodles in pork bone soup).

Anpan (sweet roll) is a dessert that summarises this place in a single bite. Order up a serving and see how long it takes until you're back for more!

Is there anything more pleasurable than throwing back an ice-cold beer topped off with a frothy, white head? Quench your thirst and mingle with the locals over a couple of rounds of Asahi Premium Beer Jukusen.

Junmaishu is worth tasting. Straight up or mixed? The barkeeper will have a couple of tasty recommendations.

You're heading all the way to Bora, so why not put in the extra effort to learn a handful of words and phrases in the local tongue? It's bound to make your experience that much sweeter. 'Yoi ichinichi o' means 'have a nice day'. Another one to commit to memory is 'Isshoni odorimasenka?', which means 'would you like to dance?'.

Planning to be here on the 23rd of December? You're in luck. On this date each year, the whole country comes together to celebrate Birthday of Emperor Akihito.

When it comes time to pack up your belongings, spend the last of your holiday allowance and wave "後でお会いしましょう (Atode o ai shimashou)" to Bora.

If you're catching a plane home, it's wise to plan your route to the terminal in advance. From the middle of Bora, you'll need to go some 280 kilometres northeast to Naha Airport (OKA), the closest airport.
