Most famous for Cape Leeuwin, the dramatic peninsula where the Southern and Indian Oceans meet, you’ll soon realise why everyone talks about how amazing it is. Even those who love their sleep-ins will find themselves pondering a 5:30am wake-up call - sunrise and sunset at Cape Leeuwin is heaven for photographers (even amateurs with smart phones). This is one of the few places around the world where you can watch the sun both rise and set over the ocean without having to move a single step. Standing on this spectacular site, Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse offers daily tours which will give a little insight into its role navigating those clashing seas.
While it may all look rough and tumble from up there on the cape, this actually creates a protected haven of shoreline where swimming is a breeze. Flinders Bay, near the southern end of town, offers a number of beaches where you can switch between your towel in the sun and the cool waters of the sea all day long. Flinders Bay is also great for whale-watching, and if you’re lucky you could even spot one from the shoreline! To increase your chances, whale-watching charters can take you up close to whales, dolphins and even New Zealand Fur Seals. For more underwater action, divers will love the underwater caves, wrecks and colourful marine life here.
For something a little different, just eight kilometres north of town sits Jewel Cave – one of the most decorated caves in the world. You’ll feel a million dollars in here! With four massive chambers and the longest straw stalactites in the world, this is one underground experience that’ll blow your mind. Back on top of the surface, around Augusta there are two wineries offering cellar door sales for you to take back to the hotel. Only two you say? Not quite – there are more! You’ll just have to drive a wee bit further, but the trip is so pretty you won’t even notice. Augusta is the most southerly part of the Margaret River Wine Region, so it’s all there on your doorstep.
