It's 170 kilometres to the southwest of Edinburgh, the nation's capital.

Is there anything more pleasurable than listening to the sounds of the local bird life by the water's edge? Plan a visit to Irvine Beach or Newcastle Beach for a sublime day out.

You don't need to be stuck on the road all day to witness a bit of nature. Just 40 kilometres out of Ardwell, Copeland Islands is a lovely place to sit back and relax. Even more tranquil surrounds await at Blackhead Path, 50 kilometres away.

Want to get a bit of exercise? Burn off some of those travel calories with a nice, long walk around the Logan Botanic Garden. You can also look for native plants and small animals at the Ardwell Gardens.

Travel 30 kilometres to the northeast and you'll come across Newton Stewart. It's popular for some outstanding sights, such as 7stanes - Kirroughtree and Torhouse Stone Circle.

Go on a day trip and see some sights in Bangor. This place is 50 kilometres to the west and not too far from Castle Park, Sunken Gardens and Bangor Abbey. That said, you won't want to miss Bangor Castle and Crawfordsburn Country Park either.

There's a whole world of fresh flavours waiting to dance across your taste buds in Dumfries and Galloway. With plenty of delicious things to indulge in, all you need to take along is a solid appetite — and perhaps a pair of stretchy trousers.

There's no need to agonise over the restaurant menu when you're in Ardwell. Just dive straight in and choose the regional specialties, such as Scotch pie and cullen skink (fish soup).

It can be a challenge to separate the wheat from the chaff when it comes to excellent beers, but one brew worth knocking back is Belhaven. Grab one and bottoms up!

It's always sad when a holiday comes to an end. However, your time in the charming Dumfries and Galloway region will have made you richer, no matter how little of your holiday allowance remains.

When the time arrives to pack your suitcase and head back home, the nearest terminal, George Best Belfast City Airport (BHD), is 60 kilometres to the west.
