lastminute.com.au team travel dreams for 2016.

Working in travel is torture.

Seriously.

It’s like constant teasing – the more you learn about destinations, the more you wanna pack your desk up and bail to the other side of the world. But to do that, you need money. You need to work to get money. And thus begins the vicious cycle.

For those of us who live and breath travel, the thirst for trips never fade #thestruggleisreal.  ATM, I need to get my butt to Iceland. Ever since I saw the Aurora in Alaska over Christmas, you could say I’ve been lusting after those lights ever since.

But enough about me! Here’s where the lastminute team is lusting after in 2016:

Shauna

This year I want to travel to Japan! From the cherry blossoms to the Harajuku girls and unique cuisine, Japan offers a range of experiences that you can’t get anywhere else in the world.

Read more on Japan.

I want to go back to London, ‘cause all my friends keep running away there.  I want to drink snakebites in a dodgy pub, eat schluffanoodle* at Camden Markets, play with fireworks on Bonfire Night, and FINALLY finish exploring the British Museum. And I really, really want to go to the Natural History Museum – how did I miss that?!   *OK, it’s actually called schupfnudfeln, but I could never pronounce that. Sorry, Germany

It’s almost time to travel back to San Fransisco and catch up with one of my oldest friends. Having close friends halfway across the world makes a great excuse to travel 😉

While San Fran is a fantastic place for an urban adventure – so many different neighborhoods have their own personality, what most people don’t realise is how close you are to some great coastal tracks and the wine country. Friends, food, fresh air and of course wine = a perfect combo for a great escape.

Watashi wa Nihon ni ryokō shitaidesu. Any guesses what destination I’m talking about? I’ll give you a hint: they have snow monkeys, amazing pow and electronic toilets. It’s JAPAN! Ever since I finished my working holiday stint in Whistler, Canada I’ve wanted to go to Japan. Not only for their amazing powder covered slopes but the culture, experiences and all-round awesomeness of the country.

It seems like nearly every third person I talk to are either going there soon or have recently come back…it’s definitely on the top of my list for this year.

I want to travel to Tasmania this year. All the foodies I know tell me it’s a great destination for local produce, cheese and wine. There are so many options for food walking tours in Hobart, whisky tours in the Central Highlands and a seafood cooking school in the Bay of Fires.

We’ve got Tas-mania! How gorg is the #BayofFires?! We’ll take a road trip there anyday Ta @sarahjanesaddiction for the pic x A photo posted by www.lastminute.com.au (@lastminutecomau) on

There is a Horse Trekking Farm Stay in the Huon Valley that is perfect for beginners, including a home-cooked morning tea and breath-taking views. A trip to Tassie wouldn’t be complete without a trek to see Cradle Mountain and a selfie taken overlooking Dove Lake. Of course, don’t forget the culture! MONA is on my bucket list too.

Not sure if this is cheating as it’s a place I’ve already visited. But, basically VEGAS BABY, just to fill you in,  Vegas is my spirit animal. I am at one with the food, the rooftop pool bars, the shopping, the Nevada sun and the bright-night city-lights. I’ll leave the gambling to you, but there’s something quite invigorating about getting caught up in an adrenaline rush, diving head first into a rooftop roller coaster, watching a once in a life time show, and meeting people you’ll never forget.

Living in Brisbane, it’s been too long between chilly, misty mornings and watching the sun set over the snow. I want to head to the NSW Ski Fields this Winter and hit the slopes at Perisher. I’m not a great skier, but for me the Snowy Mountains experience is all about being brave every morning as I click on my ski boots, rugging up layer-upon-layer to face the cold, eating soups with crusty bread, sipping hot chocolate with marshmallows from gloved hands, and sharing a few rounds of schnapps in front of a fire at the end of an exhausting day of falling over, and over, and over.

The Yarra Valley needs to happen in 2016. It’s no secret I love a good food and wine destination and with the Semillon of the Hunter Valley, the Shiraz of the Barossa and the Pinot Noir of Tasmania firmly ticked off my list, it’s time to extend the wine getaway love to Victoria’s Yarra Valley. A fancy pants stay at Chataeu Yering Historic House would seal the deal.
