Whether you're looking for a romantic escape, you want a getaway with your best pals or you're just in need of a decent dose of R&R, our Yarra Valley hotels are the perfect base for exploring
Victoria's world-renowned wine region.
History
The Yarra Valley was named after the Yarra River and was first inhabited by the Aboriginal Yarra Yarra tribe. European settlers started arriving in the 1850s and you can get a taste for what life would have been like for them by visiting Gulf Station.
In more recent history, the area's first vineyard, Yering Station, was planted in 1938, making it Victoria's oldest winery and definitely worth a looksee.
Things to Do
Nature lovers will feel right at home in the Toorongo Falls Reserve and Alowyn Gardens, as well as the
Healesville Sanctuary, where you can pat a platypus, a dingo and some kangaroos. The Yarra Valley is also home to heaps of epic waterfalls but two of our favourites are Keppel Falls and Phantom Falls, so be sure to check them out.
For a really romantic afternoon, you can go for a hot air balloon ride over some of the vineyards in the area before touching down on the ground and going on a wine tour or sitting down for an elegant meal paired with fine wine.
Shopping and Dining
The Yarra Valley has a handful of markets throughout the region but the most popular one is probably the Yarra Valley Farmers' Market, held at Yering Station on the third Sunday of the month. Besides the fact that there are all sorts of delicious goodies for sale here, the thing that makes this market special is that it's the longest running market in all of Victoria!
Of course no trip to the Yarra Valley would be complete without at least one wine tour. There are over 50 wineries in the region, so don't worry if you don't have time to sample vino from every single boutique vineyard and cellar door.
Need some great eats to complement the incredible bottle of vino you just purchased? Grab some gourmet delights from one of the local farm gates or sit down for a fancy meal at an upscale restaurant in town.
Getting Here and Around
The Yarra Valley is just over an hour away from the
Melbourne Airport, so get your hands on one of these
cheap flights to Melbourne. From there, you can either jump on a bus tour to visit the wineries or take matters into your own hands by designating a driver and hiring a car.
