Top 5 travel selfies everyone should take

Travelling is awesome. I always thought it was all about creating memories, seeing new and exciting things, and putting Imodium to the test. But after returning from a recent three-legged trip to Singapore, Hong Kong and China, I realised the most important thing was capturing the best selfies. Word.

Now I know this might sound vain, but when I was looking through the photos from my adventure I seriously got the most feels when I saw all the selfies, not the ye-old-timey-stock-standard holiday snaps. I have a stronger recollection of what I was experiencing at the time, and I could actually draw a direct correlation of how much fun I was having based on the amount of duck face, using a scale of 1 to Kim Kardashian (take that, science).

Here are the top five travel selfies everyone should take:

1. Screaming baby on the plane selfie
Not all planes are filled with screaming mini-travellers, but in the event you come across one targeting your earhole – take a selfie. It’s a reminder that this trip can only get better from here. On Scoot flights you can book ScootInSilence seats that guarantee you a bit of shoosh during your flight. Your move my nappy-wearing friend.

2. Goofy souvenir selfie
I’m always up for a lol, so when I came across these souvenirs at Singapore Zoo I knew I had to immortalise the moment with a selfie. Singapore Zoo’s River Safari is great if you only have a short stopover. Entry is cheap and you can cover a lot of ground quickly. It also features the most awesome creatures like dugongs (my spirit animal) and pandas.

3. Important cultural significance selfie
These have to be my favourite; they’re the bucket-list moments of travel. And nothing says “I’m not ready to die” like taking a selfie in front of the Oriental Pearl TV Tower in Shanghai and posting it with a #unicorn hashtag. The Bund area is Shanghai’s waterfront; it was originally a British settlement after the first Opium War, so it’s full of beautiful colonial buildings. Now it’s the coolest place to take in the skyline at night.

4. Great hotel lighting selfie
Any self-respecting selfie aficionado understands that great lighting is fundamental to great selfies. Years from now, I’ll turn to one of my friends and be like, “Remember when I took that awesome selfie at Hotel Panorama by Rhombus in Hong Kong?” and they’ll be like, “Yeah. That was a good time” and I’ll be like, “Yeah.” So thank you Hotel Panorama by Rhombus for getting the lights right – and for being in Hong Kong’s coolest location. I found Tsim Sha Tsui to be the best spot in Hong Kong for nightlife and there’s a brilliant place next door for a foot massage.

5. Strange and wonderful animal selfie
An argument could be made that all my selfies are strange and wonderful animal selfies, but that wouldn’t be very nice. I mean, really, how often will you get the chance to take a selfie with a panda or piranha? Pfft, hardly ever. The Giant Panda Forest at Singapore Zoo is an incredible enclosure. I was there during feeding time, and they were really active and showing some bamboo who’s boss; most other times they’re just chill, so it’s worth checking the feeding times in advance.

Pro Tip: Invest in a selfie stick. You can pick up one with built-in bluetooth from Hong Kong’s Ladies Markets for around $100 HKD ($15 AUD). You’ll get a much better shot when you’re trying to include specific backgrounds in your selfies.

So, dear traveller, ducky those lips and find your good angle. It’s time to selfie your way through your next travel destination.
Cheeeeeeeeeese!

    ‘What should my caption be?
I want it to be clever
How about “Livin’ with my bitches, hash tag LIVE”
I only got 10 likes in the last 5 minutes
Do you think I should take it down?
    Let me take another selfie’
