Air Canada History
Known as Trans-Canada Airlines till January 1, 1965, the name was changed to Air Canada following the approval of a private member's bill to change the name of the airline. By acquiring Canadian Airlines, Canada's second largest airline, Air Canada became the world's 12th largest commercial airline. Air Canada was the winner of the Best North American Airline in the 2005 World Airline Awards. Through the Dreams Take Flight program created by Air Canada, it flies children with special needs to Disneyland for a day.
Air Canada Today
With a fleet of 198 aircrafts, Air Canada is currently the 14th largest commercial airline in the world. Today, Air Canada offers service to over 795 destinations in 139 countries through its strategic and commercial arrangements with Star Alliance members and several other airlines. The regions currently served by Air Canada include Asia, Europe, North America, South America and Oceania.
From October 31st, 2006, Air Canada will begin flights between Edmonton and London Heathrow. In Australia, Air Canada offers international flights only from Sydney's Kingsford Smith International Airport. Air Canada is planning to begin daily flights between Toronto and Sydney via Los Angeles starting the first quarter of 2007; provided the airline gets approval from the Australian, Canadian and U.S. governments.
On majority of the flights the classes of service (airline tickets) offered by Air Canada includes Executive First (business class), Executive Class, Premium Economy Class and Economy Class. The free baggage allowance is fixed at 23 kilos (Economy Service) and 32 kilos (Executive Class), and on international flights it is 23 kilos (Premium Economy Class).
