Overview
Millar Road offers seriously stylish accommodation on a beautiful vineyard estate in Hawke's Bay on the east coast of New Zealand’s North Island.
Nestled into the northern end of the Tuki Tuki Hills, Millar Road overlooks a secluded north-facing valley and the coastal townships of Te Awanga and Haumoana. Views from Millar Road are panoramic taking in Te Mata Peak, the Kaweka Ranges, Mount Ruapehu, Hawke’s Bay wine country, vineyards, olive groves, farmland, Napier’s Bluff Hill and the Pacific Ocean to Mahia Peninsula at the top of Hawke Bay.
Hawke’s Bay is New Zealand’s oldest and second largest winemaking region. Hawke’s Bay is also home to a world-class concentration of Art Deco architecture, fresh local produce and artisan food producers complemented by vibrant arts and design scenes and a rich Maori culture.
Millar Road is a true New Zealand design experience. The suite of buildings was designed by Nick Bevin of award-winning architects bevin+slessor in a style that Nick describes as “reminiscent of New Zealand river and lakeside baches [holiday homes] of the 1950’s and 60’s with their relaxed interior layouts and clear, uncomplicated and familiar architecture”. The architecture combines perfectly with furniture, furnishings and art sourced from contemporary New Zealand practitioners to create simple but beautiful surroundings. The result is a superior relaxing getaway achieved in a stylish, contemporary and distinctly New Zealand manner.
The Millar Road estate includes “Haumoana House”, two villas (“MRd1” and “MRd2”), a 4x15 metre swimming pool and a pool house incorporating a bar perfect for preparing evening cocktails. Living, dining and kitchen areas in each residence are large, open-plan affairs that integrate with outdoor terraces to expand the entertaining areas and allow for indoor-outdoor wining, dining and relaxing.
Haumoana House has three king bedrooms, two bathrooms (one ensuite) and a study with two rollaway beds. Guests can soak in the bath while soaking in views of the Pacific Ocean. Villas MRd1 and MRd2 each have two king bedrooms both with ensuite bathrooms. A “bathing room” at the rear of each villa contains a cradle bath ideal for soaking away aches and pains after a long day’s lying by the pool. Haumoana House can sleep up to eight adults and each villa up to four adults for a total of up to 16 adults on site. Infants stay free and portable cots and high chairs are available.
All residences are completely self-contained, including fully-equipped kitchens and gas barbeques. Facilities include Sky TV, DVD players, CD players, iPod connections, wireless broadband internet and laundry facilities. Guests can roam around the entire 20-hectare vineyard property. Villa MRd2 is wheelchair friendly.
A chilled bottle of &Co wine awaits guests. &Co Ltd. was established in 2009 by Millar Road and sources grapes exclusively from the Millar Road estate to produce one single-estate aromatic white wine every year. The Millar Road vineyard is a stellar viticultural site perfectly suited for producing aromatic wine with intense aromas and flavours. &Co has received rave reviews since the launch of its first wine in November 2009.
Artisan-produced provisions are provided on arrival. Mini bars in each residence and the pool bar contain a considered selection of leading New Zealand beverages. Millar Road is perfect for entertaining and catering can be organised if required – anything from a drop-off meal to a fully-catered meal prepared and served in-house.
Millar Road provides guests with “The List”, a one-page biased guide to the best coffee, dining, shopping, art and spa experiences in Hawke’s Bay. Concierge services are available on request for further advice and specialist recommendations.
