If you are travelling North from Greymouth or heading to the Glaciers on SHW6 from the North then you will drive right past us! We are midway between the Glaciers and Abel Tasman/Picton/Nelson. Close to Punakaiki.

This is one of the more remote West Coast Lodges but easily accessible by car being only 2KM from State Highway 6 and also convenient to Westport and Punakaiki. Birds Ferry Lodge is seamlessly set upon its hilltop where it sits content, quietly musing on the far-reaching, sea-lined views and acres of wild bush clad countryside. Here there is no TV, no landline and no just a wealth of peace, seclusion, beauty and views to die for!

IF YOU CHOOSE A LODGE ROOM:
Step onto the deck from your room and enjoy the ocean sunset from the heated spa. Or take a break in the luxuriously appointed guest lounge in front of the log fire. Privately accessed accommodation is ensuite with bath and shower and Superking or twin beds. Lodge tariff includes refreshments, laundry, broadband internet and a fabulous continental breakfast.(Cooked options are also available) Cottage Tariff does not include these named extras. Dinner with wine is available from $90 per person.Prior notification of dinner requirements is essential to avoid disappointment. House bar, with New Zealand Wines.

The Grand View Lodge Room
You will immediately see why we chose this name! From your room you will enjoy panoramic views from the ocean, up the length of the Totara Valley to the Paparoa ranges in the East. This is the larger of our two rooms with its own private sitting area with leather up holstered chairs from which to enjoy the spectacular views. The balcony will draw you to take in the incredible sunsets and spectacular lodge gardens and panoramic view.
The Grand View Room is indulgently appointed with a top range Super King bed, quality linens, down duvet and pillow topped mattress. (the bed can be divided on request to be twin beds)
Your in-room refreshment centre, complete with fridge is stocked with homemade all butter shortbread, quality teas and freshly ground, locally roasted organic 'Fair Trade' plunger coffee.
Ensuite bathroom with heated towel rail and power shower over bath. Hand made Marlborough handmade toiletries and fluffy robes.
A short stroll along the deck takes you to the Spa from where you can enjoy the sunset.
Full cooked gourmet breakfast includes: Free range eggs, home-made bread and preserves, plus a wide range of cooked items.

Sorry, the Lodge is not suitable for children under 12 but Ferry Mans Cottage is perfect for children. Travel Cot and high chair available.

Luxurious Self-Contained Cottage near Punakaiki, West Coast
Ferry Man's Cottage offers luxurious and romantic holiday home accommodation, set in its own private 12 acre section at the very end of Birds Ferry Road, forming part of our 33 acre property.
It is the perfect spot for a romantic weekend or mini break or a family holiday. Located on the edge of a small Lake, 2 km from the highway and, with native Wekas, Pukekos and wild ducks as neighbours this is a most peaceful spot. The rare Kiwi can be heard at night here.
The luxurious bach (cottage) is finished to a very high standard and designed to take in the panoramic mountain and ocean views. All the luxury touches of Birds Ferry Lodge but with a fully equipped kitchen in your own very private setting.
Rooms
There are two large bedrooms, 1 x four-poster Queen, and 1 x Superking which splits to be 2 singles.
There is a double sleep sofa in the lounge.
Cot and high chair are available as well as a wide selection of indoor and outdoor games plus DVD's.
The cottage is very cosy and warm at all times of the year - the bedrooms have oil filled radiators, electric blankets, the bathroom has underfloor heating and there is a 'Metro' wood burner in the lounge which packs a punch!
Tariff includes gourmet breakfast hamper. If you don“t want to cook, we are happy to provide a Cottage Dinner.(For details see our food/menu page) WIFI now with boosted signal for Blackberry, Ipad and Iphone.
The cottage has decks and outdoor furniture back and front meaning you can enjoy the sunshine at any time of the day. By the front deck there are TWIN OUTDOOR GARDEN BATHS with hot running water (One for you and one for your significant other - how romantic is that!) from where you can watch the sun go down in spectacular fashion with a glass of bubbles perhaps.

The historic Buller area has a multitude of activities, accessible areas of luxuriant forest, rich birdlife and a wild coastline. Andre, a New Zealand tour guide with 15 years experience can accompany you on a personal tailor made local tour. He will help you find those places seldom visited by others. On arrival, many of our guests ask to extend their visit to more than one night. Why? You might ask. On arrival you will discover the answer to this.

Business Facilities
Whilst our remote location at Birds Ferry Lodge means we have no land line or fax - enjoy the peace and quiet, we do have wirless broadband internet access, scanner and good mobile phone reception. Not available in all cottages - please ask.
Getting There
PLEASE NOTE CHECK IN TIME IS FROM 4PM ONLY.
From the South, We are 8KM North of Charleston.
Drive North on SHW6 from Charleston. You will cross the (Little) Totara River then after crossing the Big Totara River drive slowly for a further 1.1KM, at the top of the hill turn left into Birds Ferry Road.
From Westport:
17km from Westport on SH6 you will come to Birds Ferry Road on your Right. Watch for the wooden sign on the right, at the end of a long straight section of road.
From Nelson take SHW6. Take care at Inangahua Junction. You need to take SHW6 not SHW69. 7km out of Westport take the left/south turn for Greymouth (SH6) and drive for 11km. Watch for the wooden sign on the right, at the end of a long straight section of road. Once on Birds Ferry Road follow the power poles for 1.8km, on the unsealed road, to the gate where a warm welcome awaits you.
Ferry Man's Cottage - Guests should proceed directly to the cottage which is 300m beyond the Lodge on Birds Ferry Road.
Please remember self catering facilities are only available in the cottages - NOT in the Lodge. Dinner MUST be prebooked, please find our contact number on your booking confirmation.
