Keen to check out Australia’s capital? Then you’ll want to sleep among the action! Known by many names – like Civic Centre, City Centre, Canberra City and the CBD – Civic is the heart of Canberra
, and the whole nation for that matter. This is where you’ll find stacks of shops, bars and restaurants to hook into, as well as some major sights. And the rest of Canberra is still right on your doorstep! Get in and book your Civic hotel with us below.
Like the sound of shopping? Civic has got you covered. The major mall, Canberra Centre, was actually Australia’s first fully-enclosed shopping mall, so while you shop for some funky new-season fashions (or kick back in the cinema) you’ll also be browsing through a piece of national history. Never before has history been so fun! You’ll also want to check out City Walk, which has some great coffee houses and outdoor eateries to give your tired feet a break, and Garema Place, which also has heaps of great boutiques, street fashions, alternative music stores and designer labels. Once you’re feeling a million bucks, you’ll be glad to know you’re in the right place to be wined and dined – or partied out if that’s more your style. From al fresco cafes to fine dining restaurants, and from wine bars to pubs and bopping dance clubs, Civic has the widest variety of bars and restaurants to lull the nights away.
But it’s not all about shopping and gastronomic pleasures, because you can do that anywhere. Some sights that are unique to this politically-charged CBD include the Canberra Museum and Gallery (CMAG), which has a great permanent collection called Reflecting Canberra, and Canberra Theatre Centre, the place to go for a fab show. It’s prob best to book a ticket in advance though! You might also like the ACT Craft and Design Centre, which shows some fascinating emerging artworks, and the National Capital Exhibition, which tells the story of Canberra (a more informative history lesson than shopping, no doubt). Canberra’s casino and the National Convention Centre are also in Civic. But if you’re keen for some green space to escape all the city confines – though Canberra is super spaced out and far from overbearing – take to Commonwealth Park on the banks of the lake, or Glebe Park, which is totally gorgeous when it changes with the seasons.
Once you’ve ticked all that off, it’s time to explore the rest of Canberra! Take the bridge over Lake Burley Griffin and on the other side you’ll be immersed in Australian politics: Parliament House. Suss out the public areas or take a guided tour, and don’t miss the paintings, sculptures and other bits in the Parliament House Art Collection. Also nearby is the National Rose Garden, Old Parliament House, High Court of Australia and Stirling Park. Head a bit further – okay, 35 minutes out of town – and you can explore over 140 vineyards around the Canberra Wine Region! Even further, and you’re at the Snowy Mountains!
As Australia’s capital, Canberra deserves a ranking on everyone’s destie to-do list. And Civic is def the best part of town for shopping, dining and nightlife – and for access to the city’s sights and the whole of ACT. So don’t bother staying anywhere else! Book your Civic accommodation with us to get the perfect pozzy in Canberra.
